A system and method for monitoring the health of an animal using multiple sensors is described. The wearable device may include one or more sensors whose resultant signal levels may be analyzed in the wearable device or uploaded to a data management server for additional analysis.

The present invention relates to the detection of markers in exhaled breath, wherein the detection of the presence or absence of the marker(s) in exhaled breath is used to assess various clinical data, including patient adherence in taking the medication and patient enzymatic (metabolic) competence in metabolizing the medication. An embodiment of the invention comprises a parent therapeutic agent labeled with a marker, where upon metabolism (e.g., via enzymatic action) of the therapeutic agent, the marker becomes volatile or semi-volatile and is present in the breath. In certain related embodiments, the marker contain a deuterium label, which is also present in the breath upon metabolism of the therapeutic agent. In another embodiment of the invention, the therapeutic agent is associated with a taggant (that may be either labeled or unlabeled with deuterium), which in turn will generate a marker in the breath that is easily measurable.

Medication adherence monitoring system

The methods described herein enable the evaluation of compounds on subjects to assess their therapeutic efficacy or toxic effects. The target of analysis is the underlying biochemical process or processes (i.e., metabolic process) thought to be involved in disease pathogenesis. Molecular flux rates within the one or more biochemical processes serve as biomarkers and are quantitated and compared with the molecular flux rates (i.e., biomarker) from control subjects (i.e., subjects not exposed to the compounds). Any change in the biomarker in the subject relative to the biomarker in the control subject provides the necessary information to evaluate therapeutic efficacy of an administered drug or a toxic effect and to develop the compound further if desired. In one aspect of the invention, stable isotope-labeled substrate molecules are administered to a subject and the label is incorporated into targeted molecules in a manner that reveals molecular flux rates through one or more metabolic pathways of interest. By this method, a comparison between subjects and control subjects reveals the effects of the chemical entity or entities on the biomarkers. This, in turn, allows for the identification of potential therapeutic uses or toxicities of the compound. Combinations of compounds can also be systematically evaluated for complementary, synergistic, or antagonistic actions on the metabolic pathways of interest, using the methods of the present invention as a strategy for identifying and confirming novel therapeutic or toxic combinations of compounds.

The disclosure relates breath test devices and methods for the evaluation of liver functional and metabolic capacity or to assess liver heath and/or degree of liver injury. Specifically, there is provided a method of evaluating a liver condition, the method includes on-line monitoring a metabolic product of methacetin, a salt or a derivative of methacetin, in a subject's breath after administering to the subject isotope labeled methacetin, a salt or a derivative thereof in water solution form. There is also provided a device for evaluating a liver condition, the device includes one or more sensors adapted to monitor on-line an isotope level of a metabolic product of labeled methacetin, or a salt or a derivative of methacetin in a subject's breath and a controller adapted to sample measurements of the one or more sensors at a continuous mode.

Breath test device and method

The present disclosure concerns methods of administering and detecting a distinguishable agent in a sample from and assessing the condition of an organ in a subject. In a particular embodiment, the present invention concerns methods of detecting and comparing the cholate shunt, in a subject, preferably in a subject with chronic hepatitis C. In certain embodiments, the methods may comprise obtaining a sample from a subject such as a blood or saliva sample after administering an oral and intravenous dose of a distinguishable agent such as cholate and analyzing the sample clearance of the distinguishable agent from the subject and comparing the clearance levels in order to assess hepatic health. In another embodiment, the methods may comprise analyzing a sample from a subject for the presence of a distinguishable agent such as cholate and applying information obtained from analyzing the presence of the distinguishable agent to determine a treatment for a medical condition of the subject.

Methods For Diagnosis and Intervention of Hepatic Disorders

Food allergies are an important medical problem in Westernized countries. Allergy to peanuts is a dramatic example of a food allergy that tends to be particularly severe and long-lived. This article examines food allergy—specifically peanut allergy—from the perspective that tolerance to foods is a normal state, just as tolerance to self-proteins is a normal state. From this vantage point, loss of tolerance to foods in food-allergic individuals can be viewed as parallel to the loss of tolerance to self-proteins in those with autoimmune diseases. Although our knowledge base is far from satisfactory, there are important similarities in the immunologic abnormalities that are characteristic of both peanut allergy and several autoimmune diseases. Delineation of these similarities may open the door to new therapeutic approaches for the treatment of severe food allergies.
