Journal ArticleDOI
The instructive extracellular matrix of the lung: basic composition and alterations in chronic lung disease.
Gerald Burgstaller,Bettina Oehrle,Michael Gerckens,Eric S. White,Herbert B. Schiller,Oliver Eickelberg +5 more
TL;DR: This review summarises the available data about the structure and function of the pulmonary ECM, and highlights changes that occur in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma and lung cancer.
Journal ArticleDOI
Generation of Human 3D Lung Tissue Cultures (3D-LTCs) for Disease Modeling.
Michael Gerckens,Hani N. Alsafadi,Darcy E. Wagner,Michael Lindner,Gerald Burgstaller,Melanie Königshoff +5 more
TL;DR: The highest benefit of the 3D-LTC ex vivo model is its close representation of the in situ human lung in respect of 3D tissue architecture, cell type diversity and lung anatomy as well as the potential for assessment of tissue from individual patients, which is relevant to further develop novel strategies for precision medicine.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cell-surface phenotyping identifies CD36 and CD97 as novel markers of fibroblast quiescence in lung fibrosis.
Katharina Heinzelmann,Mareike Lehmann,Michael Gerckens,Nina Noskovičová,Marion Frankenberger,Michael Lindner,Rudolf Hatz,Jürgen Behr,Anne Hilgendorff,Melanie Königshoff,Melanie Königshoff,Oliver Eickelberg,Oliver Eickelberg +12 more
TL;DR: A panel of stable surface markers in human lung fibroblasts is identified, applicable for positive-cell isolation directly from lung tissue, and complex surface protein changes during fibroblast-myofibroblast activation are identified.
Journal ArticleDOI
Clinical Course of Three Postoperative Symptomatic COVID-19 Cases in Patients After Lung Lobectomy.
Mircea Gabriel Stoleriu,Michael Gerckens,Justin Hetrodt,Marion Heiß-Neumann,Ina Koch,Elvira Stacher-Priehse,Julien Dinkel,Jürgen Behr,Uwe Grützner,Rudolf Hatz +9 more
TL;DR: 3 cases of coronavirus disease 2019 occurring in patients shortly after thoracotomy and thoracoscopy procedures are reported, illustrating the imminent threat of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronav virus 2 infection for thoracic surgery patients.

Autocrine Sfrp1 inhibits lung fibroblast invasion during transition to injury induced myofibroblasts
Christoph Mayr,Arunima Sengupta,Meshal Ansari,Jeanine Pestoni,Paulina Ogar,Ilias Angelidis,Andreas Liontos,Alberto Rodriguez-Castillo,Niklas J. Lang,Maximilian Strunz,Sara Asgharpour,Diana Porras-Gonzalez,Michael Gerckens,Bettina Oehrle,Valeria Viteri-Alvarez,Isis E. Fernandez,Michelle D. Tallquist,Martin Irmler,Johannes Beckers,Oliver Eickelberg,Gabriel Mircea Stoleriu,Jürgen Behr,Nikolaus Kneidinger,Ali Önder Yildirim,Katrin Ahlbrecht,Rory E. Morty,Christos Samakovlis,Fabian J. Theis,Gerald Burgstaller,Herbert B. Schiller +29 more
TL;DR: This study reveals the convergence of spatially and transcriptionally distinct fibroblast lineages into transcriptionally uniform myofibroblasts and identifies Sfrp1 as an autocrine inhibitor of fibro Blast invasion during early stages of fibrogenesis.
