A review of 1,582 consecutive Octopus off-pump coronary bypass patients
James C Hart,Ted H Spooner,John Pym,Thomas F Flavin,James R. Edgerton,Michael J. Mack,Erik W.L. Jansen +6 more
TL;DR: Octopus off-pump bypass was demonstrated to be a safe procedure with widening applicability with experience surgeons tend to apply the system to increasing proportions of their patients and are able to revascularize all coronary territories.
Journal ArticleDOI
Association Between Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion and Readmission for Thromboembolism Among Patients With Atrial Fibrillation Undergoing Concomitant Cardiac Surgery.
Daniel J. Friedman,Daniel J. Friedman,Jonathan P. Piccini,Jonathan P. Piccini,Tongrong Wang,Jiayin Zheng,S. Chris Malaisrie,David R. Holmes,Rakesh M. Suri,Michael J. Mack,Vinay Badhwar,Jeffrey P. Jacobs,Jeffrey G. Gaca,Shein-Chung Chow,Eric D. Peterson,Eric D. Peterson,J. Matthew Brennan +16 more
TL;DR: Older patients with AF undergoing cardiac surgery with and without concomitant S-LAAO was associated with a lower risk of thromboembolism and the use of surgical left atrial appendage occlusion, and these findings provide definitive evidence.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparative clinical outcomes of thymectomy for myasthenia gravis performed by extended transsternal and minimally invasive approaches.
Dan M. Meyer,Morley A. Herbert,Nasin C. Sobhani,Paul Tavakolian,Andrea F. Duncan,Michelle Bruns,Kevin Korngut,Janet L. Williams,Syma L. Prince,Lynne M. Huber,Gil I. Wolfe,Michael J. Mack +11 more
TL;DR: Thymectomy is an effective treatment in patients with myasthenia gravis with equivalent clinical outcomes obtained by either approach, and patients stopped prednisone usage after surgery in the transsternal group.
Journal ArticleDOI
Gait Speed and Operative Mortality in Older Adults Following Cardiac Surgery.
Jonathan Afilalo,Sunghee Kim,Sean M. O'Brien,J. Matthew Brennan,J. Matthew Brennan,Fred H. Edwards,Michael J. Mack,James B. McClurken,Joseph C. Cleveland,Peter K. Smith,David M. Shahian,Karen P. Alexander,Karen P. Alexander +12 more
TL;DR: Gait speed is an independent predictor of adverse outcomes after cardiac surgery, and can be used to refine estimates of operative risk, to support decision-making and, since incremental value is modest when used as a sole criterion for frailty, to screen older adults who could benefit from further assessment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Risk factors for operative mortality and sternal wound infection in bilateral internal mammary artery grafting.
Guo-Wei He,William H. Ryan,Tea E. Acuff,Richard T. Bowman,Mark B. Douthit,Cheng-Qin Yang,Michael J. Mack +6 more
TL;DR: Bilateral internal mammary artery grafting does not increase operative mortality in properly selected patients, however, this procedure should be carefully chosen in elderly (> or = 70 years) patients and for emergency operation.
