Among the cyclic compounds of carbon, cyclopropane and its derivatives are outstanding by virtue of their unusual structural, spectroscopic, and chemical properties. The cyclopropane ring more closely resembles the CC double bond than the cyclobutane ring: it is a small ring with “double bond character”. Cyclopropyl and vinyl groups interact with neighbouring π-electron systems and p-electron centers; both cyclopropane derivatives and olefins form metal complexes, and add strong acids, halogens, and ozone; they both undergo catalytic hydrogenation and cycloadditions. While distinct differences in reactivity do exist–the double bond usually being more reactive than the three-membered ring–there are no fundamental differences in behavior.–Although cyclopropane derivatives have been known for more than 90 years, intensive studies have been limited to the past 25 years. The development of carbene chemistry has rendered cyclopropane derivatives far more readily accessible. In recent years, the synthetic potential of the small-ring function has been increasingly exploited. A considerable number of newly developed methods utilizing this approach clearly demonstrates that the reactivity of the cyclopropene ring, like that of the CC double bond, qualify it as a “functional carbon group”. This development is in full swing; we may therefore justifiably devote considerable effort to the study of cyclopropane chemistry.

Unter den cyclischen Kohlenstoffverbindungen treten Cyclopropan und seine Derivate durch ungewohnliche strukturelle, spektroskopische und chemische Eigenschaften hervor. Der Cyclopropanring steht der CC-Doppelbindung naher als dem Cyclobutanring: Er ist ein Kleinring mit “Doppelbindungscharakter”. Cyclopropyl- wie Vinylgruppen treten mit benachbarten π-Elektronensystemen und p-Elektronenzentren in Wechselwirkung; beide, Cyclopropanderivate und Olefine, bilden Metallkomplexe, addieren starke Sauren, Halogene und Ozon, beide lassen sich katalytisch hydrieren und gehen Cycloadditionen ein. Dabei beobachtet man zwar eine Abstufung der Reaktivitat – meistens ubertrifft die Doppelbindung den Dreiring –, jedoch keinen prinzipiellen Unterschied im Verhalten. – Obwohl Cyclopropanderivate seit mehr als 90 Jahren bekannt sind, waren die Aktivitaten auf diesem Gebiet erst in den letzten 25 Jahren rege. Mit der Entwicklung der Carbenchemie sind die Synthesemoglichkeiten fur Cyclopropanderivate sprunghaft gewachsen. In den letzten Jahren wurde das Reaktivitatspotential der Kleinringfunktion in zunehmendem Mase auch fur Synthesen genutzt. Eine ansehnliche Reihe neu entwickelter Methoden auf dieser Basis demonstriert einleuchtend, das der Cyclopropanring wegen seiner Reaktivitat ahnlich wie die CC-Doppelbindung als “funktionelle Kohlenstoffgruppe” aufgefast werden kann. Diese Entwicklung ist in vollem Gange; mit gutem Grund darf man daher der Cyclopropanchemie erhebliche Aufmerksamkeit widmen.

Bindungseigenschaften des Cyclopropans und chemische Konsequenzen

The first enantioselective total synthesis of scopadulcic acid A is described. The key step is a cascade intramolecular Heck reaction of a methylenecycloheptene iodide, which generates the B, C, and D rings of the scopadulan ring system in 90% yield as a single stereoisomer. A distinctive feature of these syntheses is the use of stereoselective enolization to dictate which enantiomer of the natural product is produced.

Enantiodivergent Total Syntheses of (+)- and (−)-Scopadulcic Acid A

Decomposition of vinyldiazoacetates by rhodium(II) (N-dodecylbenzenesulfonyl)prolinate (Rh2(S-DOSP)4, 1) in the presence of dienes results in a direct and highly enantioselective method for the formation of cis-divinylcyclopropanes. Combination of this process with a subsequent Cope rearrangement results in a highly enantioselective synthesis of a variety of cycloheptadienes containing multiple stereogenic centers.
