Recent analyses of organizational change suggest a growing concern with the tempo of change, understood as the characteristic rate, rhythm, or pattern of work or activity. Episodic change is contrasted with continuous change on the basis of implied metaphors of organizing, analytic frameworks, ideal organizations, intervention theories, and roles for change agents. Episodic change follows the sequence unfreeze-transition-refreeze, whereas continuous change follows the sequence freeze-rebalance-unfreeze. Conceptualizations of inertia are seen to underlie the choice to view change as episodic or continuous.

Organizational change and development

The study of cognition in organizations has burgeoned in recent years. Top-down information processing theory suggests that individuals create knowledge structures to help them process information and make decisions. While the benefits of employing such knowledge structures are widely noted, there is a growing concern that they can limit decision makers' abilities to understand their information environments and thus, compromise their decision making. This issue has captured the imagination of managerial and organizational cognition researchers. To date, their inquiry has been eclectic in focus and method. To order and advance this work, the author reviews extant research on the developmental origins and decision consequences of both the content and structure of knowledge structures at multiple levels of analysis. A host of research challenges are identified to help develop a better understanding of knowledge structure representation, development, and use in organizations.

The Nature of Managerial Work

The objective of this article is to clarify the conceptual domains of organizational identity, image, and reputation. To initiate this theory development process, we present a “social actor” conception of organizational identity. Identity-congruent definitions of image and reputation are then specified and an integrated model proposed. With the aid of this model, a structural flawin the organizational reputation literature is identified and suitable remedies proposed. In addition, the authors explore the implications of invoking identity and identification in explanations and justifications of organizational reputation.

Ecological models based on people’s knowledge: a multi-step fuzzy cognitive mapping approach

Among researchers interested in organizations and management, some of those who use cognitive mapping share a common objective: to improve organizational action. Some intervene directly at the level of the organization while others prefer to achieve this indirectly, by working at the individual level. Nevertheless those who work at the individual level rely on the ‘emancipatory’properties of a cognitive map, which facilitates reflectiveness.



After calling upon the notions of natural logic, schematization, contextuality, representation, knowledge and schema to characterize the cognitive map and its construction, we present a case, that of the idiosyncratic map of the owner-manager of a small business. We describe the mode of construction of the map and its content. A critical discussion follows underlining the traps to avoid, the elements to be improved and those that should be kept for construction of future idiosyncratic maps.

Dans le present article, c'est precisement ce type d'empreinte qui nous interesse; notre propos sera consacre au cas des usages et effets sociaux d'une epistemologie locale particuliere, celle des sciences de l'administration. Dans un premier temps, nous campons le decor en esquissant les traits saillants du champ contemporain de l'epistemologie et les lineaments de la structuration du champ des sciences de l'administration au cours du present siecle. Ensuite, nous caracterisons l'emergence et le developpement de l'epistemologie des sciences de l'administration en mettant au jour les quatre couches sedimentaires qui ponctuent son developpement. Enfin. nous consacrons une section a chacune de ces quatre couches en explorant chaque fois la forme nouvelle que prend le travail epistemologique. en particulier ses fondements, ses champs d'appui, ses objets et ses methodes, puis la representation du champ qui accompagne cette forme nouvelle de travail et. enfin, les incidences principales de ce travail sur la structuration du champ des sciences de l'administration.
