I. When we decided to publish the commentaries written for our friend and teacher Georg Lukács after reading the last version of his book, On the Ontology of Social Reality, and we reread our “Notes on Lukács Ontology,” it became immediately clear that for various reasons, we would have to write a collective introduction to the text. First—not necessarily in order of importance—to provide a few sketchy comments concerning the work's genesis, which is frequently discussed but scarcely known in its entirety. At the end of 1961 or the beginning of 1962, i.e., soon after the German manuscript of Volume I of the enormous book, Die Eigenart der Aesthetischen, was finished, Georg Lukács began a project he had cherished in his young years—his ethics.

Notes on Lukacs' Ontology

Built on petty bourgeois ideology and uniting in its combat organizations mostly déclassé middle class elements, Fascist movements developed in almost all advanced capitalist countries. They surfaced nearly everywhere during the critical period following WWI and the 1929 world crisis. Only in Germany and Italy, however, did Fascism become a decisive political factor. In Italy it succeeded as the “political solution” to the post-war crisis, while in Germany it triumphed as both a political and an economic “solution” to the great world crisis. Why did Fascism become a decisive factor in these countries, and why were the Italians and German bourgeoisie unable or unwilling to find another solution to their problems?

The answer to this question hinges on one's concept of an alternative. If one merely asks whether the Radar regime represents a specific form of that social formation called “real socialism,” then one must respond positively. The Kadar regime is clearly an alternative to the prevailing social system of Eastern Europe. When compared with one another, individual Eastern European socialist countries are identical only from the viewpoint of a typologizing sociology. If Sweden and Greece represent alternatives within the capitalist system, then Hungary under Kadar's rule is indeed an alternative within “real socialism”. In order to understand people's lives in contemporary Eastern European nations, however, one must consider the diverse historical traditions of these countries.

LOUIS: These new friends of ours are strange. They are interesting and committed leftist revolutionaries and at the same time phenomenologists. What do they want from Husserl? ANDRAS: Not long ago I was also perplexed by this “duality.” But today I don't find anything strange in it anymore. I don't even consider it a duality. Don't misunderstand me: I am still a Marxist, and I still consider Marxism the adequate ideology of this period. But don't think that our new friends feel otherwise. They have been Marxists since they became revolutionaries. LOUIS: Marxists? But aren't they phenomenologists? I don't deny that they know Marx well: in many respects, they have integrated Marxism into their philosophy. But for the three days that we have been together, all I have heard from them is “epoché,” “intentionality,” “telos,” and the like.
