Polyurea has attracted extensive attention from researchers and engineers in the field of blast and impact protection due to its excellent quasi-static mechanical properties and dynamic mechanical properties. Its mechanical properties and energy absorption capacity have been tuned by means of formulation optimization, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and the addition of reinforcing materials. Owing to the special molecular structure of polyurea, the mechanism of polyurea protection against blasts and impacts is the simultaneous effect of multiple properties. For different substrates and structures, polyurea needs to provide different performance characteristics, including adhesion, hardness, breaking elongation, etc., depending on the characteristics of the load to which it is subjected. The current article reviews relevant publications in the field of polyurea blast and impact protection, including material optimization, protection mechanisms and applications in blast and impact protection.

Impact of polyurea-coated metallic targets: computational framework

Although polyurea has attracted extensive attention in impact mitigation due to its protective characteristics during intensive loading, the ballistic performance of polyurea-reinforced ceramic/metal armor remains unclear. In the present study, polyurea-reinforced ceramic/metal armor with different structures was designed, including three types of coating positions of the polyurea. The ballistic tests were conducted with a ballistic gun; the samples were subjected to a tungsten projectile formed into a cylinder 8 mm in diameter and 30 mm in length, and the deformation process of the tested targets was recorded with a high-speed camera. The ballistic performance of the polyurea-reinforced ceramic/metal armor was evaluated according to mass efficiency. The damaged targets were investigated in order to determine the failure patterns and the mechanisms of interaction between the projectile and the target. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to observe the microstructure of polyurea and to understand its failure mechanisms. The results showed that the mass efficiency of the polyurea-coated armor was 89% higher than that of ceramic/metal armor, which implies that polyurea-coated ceramic armor achieved higher ballistic performance with lighter mass quality than that of ceramic/metal armor. The improvement of ballistic performance was due to the energy absorbed by polyurea during glass transition. These results are promising regarding further applications of polyurea-reinforced ceramic/metal armor.

Ballistic Performance of Polyurea-Reinforced Ceramic/Metal Armor Subjected to Projectile Impact

Composites of polyurea (PU) reinforced with milled glass fiber (MGf) were fabricated. The volume fraction and length of the milled glass fiber were varied to study their effects on the morphological and mechanical properties of the MGf/PU composites. The morphological attributes were characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The SEM investigations revealed a uniform distribution and arbitrary orientation of milled glass fiber in the polyurea matrix. Moreover, it seems that the composites with longer fiber exhibit better interfacial bonding. It was found from the FTIR studies that the incorporation of milled glass fiber into polyurea leads to more phase mixing and decreases the hydrogen bonding of the polyurea matrix, while having a negligible effect on the H-bond strength. The compression tests at different strain rates (0.001, 0.01, 0.1, 1, 2000 and 3000 s−1) and dynamic mechanical properties over the temperature range from −30 to 100 °C at 1 Hz were performed. Experimental results show that the compressive behavior of MGf/PU composites is nonlinear and strain-rate-dependent. Both elastic modulus and flow stress at any given strain increased with strain rate. The composites with higher fiber volume fraction and longer fiber length are more sensitive to strain rate. Furthermore, the elastic modulus, stress at 65% strain and energy absorption capability were studied, taking into account both the effect of fiber volume fraction and mean fiber length. It is noted that an increase in fiber volume fraction and fiber length leads to an increase in elastic modulus, stress at 65% strain and absorbed energy up to ~103%, 83.0% and 137.5%, respectively. The storage and loss moduli of the composites also increase with fiber volume fraction and fiber length. It can be concluded that the addition of milled glass fiber into polyurea not only improves the stiffness of the composites but also increases their energy dissipative capability.

Effects of Fiber Volume Fraction and Length on the Mechanical Properties of Milled Glass Fiber/Polyurea Composites

To investigate the effect of polyurea on the protective performance of a steel target plate under the combination of shock wave and fragments, the failure characteristics, damage process and micro mechanism of the polyurea coated steel plates with different coating methods under the combination of explosion shock waves and fragments were analyzed through experiments and numerical simulations. The results showed that single-sided coatings aggravated the damage of target plate when the coating thickness was 2 mm. While the polyurea thickness greater than 4 mm could significantly reduce the damage degree of the steel plate. When the polyurea was coated on the double sides, it would aggravate the damage, no matter how thick the polyurea was. Through microscopic research, it was found that the front coated polyurea was severely ablated by detonation products, which greatly reduce its energy absorption efficiency. The polyurea coated on the back underwent tensile fracture under the influence of tensile stress wave. The breaking of intramolecular hydrogen bond of polyurea was the key to the energy absorption of polyurea. 

High-hardness polyurea coated steel plates subjected to combined loadings of shock wave and fragments

One of the promising methods to increase the resistance of polymer-matrix composite materials to impact damage is the use of protective coatings. In this work, the effect of polyurea coating on impact-performance parameters of a woven glass-fibre-reinforced laminate is studied. The study was performed on a specially developed ballistic experimental test rig employing a pneumatic gun. Eleven polymer composite targets with dimensions 200 mm x 300 mm x 8 mm were impacted orthogonally with a steel projectile with 23.8 mm diameter and weight 54.7 g in the range of the impact speed up to 150 m/s. A comparative assessment of the ballistic limit for targets with a 1.2 mm protective coating on the front and rear faces of the target, as well as for samples without any protective coating, was performed. The impact process was captured using two high-speed cameras for filming the front and top views at 25,000 frames per second. Experimental data on the ballistic limit for uncoated and polyurea coated fiberglass plates on the front and back surfaces were obtained. It was shown that 1.2 mm thick coating on the face surface increases the ballistic limit by 20%. The nature of the damage of the GRP base plate and coating has been analyzed. The obtained data can be used for validation of numerical models of ballistic impacts of polyurea-coated laminates.
