The application of membrane technology to remove pollutant dyes in industrial wastewater is a significant development today. The modification of membranes to improve their properties has been shown to improve the permeation flux and removal efficiency of the membrane. Therefore, in this work, graphene oxide nanoparticles (GO-NPs) were used to modify the polyethersulfone (PES) membrane and prepare mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). This research is dedicated to using two types of very toxic dyes (Acid Black and Rose Bengal) to study the effect of GO on PES performance. The performance and antifouling properties of the new modified membrane were studied using the following: FTIR, SEM, AFM, water permeation flux, dye removal and fouling, and by investigating the influence of GO-NPs on the structure. After adding 0.5 wt% of GO, the contact angle was the lowest (39.21°) and the permeable flux of the membrane was the highest. The performance of the ultrafiltration (UF) membrane displayed a rejection rate higher than 99% for both dyes. The membranes showed the highest antifouling property at a GO concentration of 0.5 wt%. The long-term operation of the membrane fabricated from 0.5 wt% GO using two dyes improved greatly over 26 d from 14 d for the control membrane, therefore higher flux can be preserved.

Removal of Dyes Using Graphene Oxide (GO) Mixed Matrix Membranes.

In this work, dithiocarbamate-functionalized graphene oxide (GO-DTC) has been synthesized and applied in removal of cationic dyes; Basic Blue 41 (BB41) and Basic Red 46 (BR46). Morphology and chemical structure of the prepared GO-DTC were studied by SEM and FTIR analyses. Dye removal from wastewater solutions with variable concentration of dyes, pH, and GO-DTC dosage was evaluated. The experiments suggested a pseudo-second order kinetic model for dye adsorption onto GO-DTC, while dye adsorption isotherm data were found to fit Langmuir model. The adsorption efficiency of synthesized GO-DTC towards BB41 and BR46 was calculated to be 128.5 and 111 mg/g, respectively.

Efficient removal of cationic dyes from colored wastewaters by dithiocarbamate-functionalized graphene oxide nanosheets: From synthesis to detailed kinetics studies

The photocatalytic dye degradation ability of the synthesized zinc oxide nanoparticle was evaluated using Basic Blue 41 (BB41) and Basic Red 46 (BR46). The characteristics of Nanoparticle were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The optimization of photocatalytic degradation of dyes was conducted using response surface methodology (RSM) and genetic algorithm (GA). Catalyst dosage (0- 0.02 g), pH (2.1- 8.5), dye concentration (20- 50 ppm) and reaction time (0–180 min) were the independent variables that have the significant impact on the dye degradation. Under the optimum conditions the photocatalytic degradation efficiencies of BB41 and BR46 based on RSM were 72.56% and 67.89% respectively, whereas the optimum dye degradation according to GA were 72.36% for BB41 and 68.34% for BR46. The predicted values using RSM and GA are close to the experimental values.
