Battery power is a critical resource of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Therefore, an effective operation of WSNs depend upon the efficient use of its battery resource. Cluster based routing protocols are proven to be more energy efficient as compared to other routing protocols. Most of the cluster based routing protocols, especially Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) protocol, follows Dynamic, Distributed and Randomized (DDR) algorithm for clustering. Due to the randomness present in clustering algorithms, number of cluster heads generated varies highly from the optimal count. In this paper, we present an approach which attempts to control the randomness present in LEACH's clustering algorithm. This approach makes the cluster head count stable. NS-2 simulation results show that proposed approach improved the First Node Death (FND) time and Last Node Death (LND) time by 21 and 24 % over LEACH, 10 and 20 % as compared to Advance LEACH (ALEACH) and 5 and 35 % over LEACH with Deterministic Cluster Head Selection (LEACH-DCHS) respectively.

LEACH-MAC: a new cluster head selection algorithm for Wireless Sensor Networks

As a new multimedia information acquisition and processing method, wireless multimedia sensor network (WMSN) has great application potential and attracts more and more attentions. Compared to traditional wireless sensor networks, the routing design of WMSN has higher requirements on the quality of service (QoS). This paper systemically analyzes the similarity between social network and WMSN, then designs a QoS trust estimation model based on social network analysis, which enables each sensor node measuring the service quality by monitoring the behaviors of neighbor nodes. An energy efficient QoS assurance routing based on cluster hierarchy (EEQAR) is proposed to achieve energy efficiency and meet the requirement of QoS. To obtain a better performance, EEQAR routing adopts cellular topology to form the cluster structure and balance the energy consumption by structure movement. The simulation results show the high performance of EEQAR routing in lifetime and quality of service.

Energy Efficiency QoS Assurance Routing in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks

Reliable and energy-efficient data forwarding is significant for industrial Internet of Things (IoT) applications. A routing protocol called Network Coding and Power Control based Routing (NCPCR) is presented for unreliable wireless networks to save energy. The proposed NCPCR incorporates network coding mechanism and considers dynamic transmit power and the number of packet transmissions. In addition to the optimal transmit power, we derive the probability of successful decoding an encoded packet to achieve the network coding gain. The proposed NCPCR adopts the derived network coding gain in making intelligent decisions on whether to apply network coding or not such that energy consumption is significantly reduced. Simulation results show that the proposed NCPCR outperforms existing routing protocols in terms of lower energy consumption.

Reliable and Energy-Efficient Data Forwarding in Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks

Localizing machine-type communication (MTC) devices or sensors is becoming important because of the increasing popularity of machine-to-machine (M2M) communication networks for location-based applications. These include such as health monitoring, rescue operations, vehicle tracking, and wildfire monitoring. Moreover, efficient localization approaches for sensor-based MTC devices reduce the localization error and energy consumption of MTC devices. Because sensors are used as an integral part of M2M communication networks and have achieved popularity in underwater applications, research is being conducted on sensor localization in both underwater and terrestrial M2M networks. Major challenges in designing underwater localization techniques are the lack of good radio signal propagation in underwater, sensor mobility management, and ensuring network coverage in 3D underwater M2M networks. Similarly, predicting the mobility pattern of MTC devices, trading-off energy consumption and location accuracy pose great design challenges for terrestrial localization techniques. This article presents a comprehensive survey on the current state-of-the-art research on both terrestrial and underwater localization approaches for sensor-based MTC devices. Localization in terrestrial and underwater sensor-based m2m communication networks: architecture,classification and challenges

Wireless sensor networks consist of a large number of sensor nodes that have low power and limited transmission range and can be used in various scenario. The nodes can be deployed in the long and narrow region, such as road, bridge, tunnel and pipeline, to get some interesting information. The linear topology of these network application is different other application and have special feature, such as multi-hop, long delay, long distance and low reliability. This paper introduces the concept of linear wireless sensor networks and discusses the classification of topology and key issue of this network. The application of the linear wireless sensor network, such as road, bridge, tunnel and pipeline is presented. The research challenges are discussed at last in this paper.

The application and issuse of linear wireless sensor networks

A next-generation network (NGN) is an advanced network that exploits multiple broadband and QoS-enabled transport technologies to provide telecommunication services. The principles and requirements of convergence of wireless sensor networks are likely to deliver all the desired benefits of NGN and should be carefully studied.

In this paper, we focus on the power consumption topic, which is a fundamental concern in wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs). Node placement in WMSNs has considerable impact on network lifetime. In this paper, we have investigated and developed a power-efficient node placement scheme (PENPS) in linear WMSNs, which can minimize the average energy consumption per node and maximize the network lifetime. The analysis of PENPS and the comparison of performance with the equal-spaced placement scheme (EPS) show that PENPS scheme can significantly decrease the average energy consumption per node, which can prolong the lifetime of sensor nodes and sensor networks effectively.
