This paper proposes a stochastic multiobjective framework for daily volt/var control (VVC), including hydroturbine, fuel cell, wind turbine, and photovoltaic powerplants The multiple objectives of the VVC problem to be minimized are the electrical energy losses, voltage deviations, total electrical energy costs, and total emissions of renewable energy sources and grid For this purpose, the uncertainty related to hourly load, wind power, and solar irradiance forecasts are modeled in a scenario-based stochastic framework A roulette wheel mechanism based on the probability distribution functions of these random variables is considered to generate the scenarios Consequently, the stochastic multiobjective VVC (SMVVC) problem is converted to a series of equivalent deterministic scenarios Furthermore, an Evolutionary Algorithm using the Modified Teaching-Learning-Algorithm (MTLA) is proposed to solve the SMVVC in the form of a mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem In the proposed algorithm, a new mutation method is taken into account in order to enhance the global searching ability and mitigate the premature convergence to local minima Finally, two distribution test feeders are considered as case studies to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed SMVVC

Scenario-Based Multiobjective Volt/Var Control in Distribution Networks Including Renewable Energy Sources

Conservation Voltage Reduction (CVR) is a reduction of energy consumption resulting from a reduction of feeder voltage. While there have been numerous CVR systems deployed in North America there has been little substantive analytic analysis of the effect; the majority of the published results are based on empirical field measurements. Since these results are based on empirical measurements it is difficult to extrapolate how this technology will behave on the various types of distribution feeders found throughout the nation. This report has utilized the Taxonomy of Prototypical feeder developed under the Modern Grid Initiative (MGI), now the Modern Grid Strategy (MGS), in order to estimate the benefits of CVR on multiple distribution feeder types. This information will then be used to determine an estimate of the national benefits of a wide scale deployment of CVR.

Evaluation of Conservation Voltage Reduction (CVR) on a National Level

The possibility of leveraging the data provided by smart meters to understand the load characteristics is studied in this paper. The loads are modeled as voltage-dependent elements to increase the accuracy of volt-VAR optimization (VVO) techniques for distribution systems. VVO techniques are part of the distribution management system and may be used for purposes such as loss reduction, voltage profile improvement, and conservation voltage reduction. A deterministic framework is proposed that formulates the VVO problem as a mixed-integer quadratically constrained programming problem, which is solved efficiently using advanced branch-and-cut techniques. The proposed framework is capable of optimally controlling capacitor banks, voltage regulators, and under-load tap changers (ULTCs) for day-ahead operation planning. The results indicate that loss reductions of up to 40% and a total demand reduction of up to 4.8% are achievable under some loading conditions in a radial test system. The effect of the load voltage dependence is also demonstrated through analytical simulations.

A Framework for Volt-VAR Optimization in Distribution Systems

As power system in many countries is going to be restructured and deregulated. After deregulation, because of numerous advantageous of distributed generation (DG), the number of this kind of generators are going to be increased. DGs can affect entire system and especially distribution networks. One of the important control schemes at distribution system that DGs can change it is volt/Var control. This paper presents an efficient approach for volt/Var control in radial distribution networks takes DGs performance into consideration. In general distributed generations can be considered as PV or PQ nodes. In this paper DGs are modeled as PV nodes. The goal of this approach is to minimize power losses at distribution system through controlling the tap of load tap changer (LTC), size of substation capacitor, local controller settings and voltage amplitude of DGs. DGs, voltage regulators, local controllers, and load tap changer (LTC) are modeled completely and the optimization problem has been solved by using genetic algorithm. Finally the method is tested on IEEE 34 bus radial distribution feeders.

Impact of distributed generation on volt/Var control in distribution networks

This paper presents fuzzy-based reactive power and voltage control in a distribution system. The main purpose is to find the combination of main transformer load tap changer (LTC) positions and capacitors on/off switching operations in a day, such that the voltage deviations at the secondary bus of main transformer become as small as possible, while the reactive power flows through the main transformer and the real power losses at feeders become as little as possible. To minimize system repair cost, the total number of switching operations of LTC and capacitors in a day must be kept as few as possible. From the descriptions above, the linguistic expressions such as "as small as possible," "as little as possible," and "as few as possible" are not clear. So in this paper, the reactive power and voltage control problem is first formulated with fuzzy sets then an annealing searching technique is used to find a proper combination of LTC positions and capacitors on/off switching operations in a day. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, reactive power and voltage control in a distribution system within the service area of Yunlin District Office of Taiwan Power Company (TPC) are analyzed. It is found that a proper dispatching schedule for LTC positions and capacitors switching operations can be reached by the proposed method.

The paper shows that new supervisory type control schemes can be developed to improve the performance of both the voltage regulator controllers and also the substation capacitor controllers that are used at the substations for volt/VAr control. The new voltage regulator controller makes use of the voltage drop characteristics of the feeders it regulates. The capacitor controller uses local real and reactive power measurements for power factor control at the substation.
