Antecedents and consequences of problematic smartphone use: A systematic literature review of an emerging research area

Research on Phubbing has received a lot of attention in recent years from the research community. However, the studies conducted are mainly based on linear statistics, which is a very conservative method for data analysis. To overcome this limitation, we adopted a data mining and machine learning-based approach to identify the patterns related to Phubbing behavior. We developed several models on online survey data that we collected for our analysis purposes. The results highlighted that addiction measures fail to predict Phubbing fully. Indeed, Phubbing appeared to be linked in a nonlinear way to both Information and Communication Technology (ICT) measures that do not imply a dysfunctional use of technology and social anxiety. Moreover, the machine learning approach appeared more suitable than traditional linear statistics methods to predict Phubbing, as highlighted by a much higher explained variance. Phubbing is not solely attributable to addiction dynamics. Phubbing is indicated by a series of predictors that cannot be reduced to addiction (e.g., age, social anxiety, ICT services owned). Modeling procedures able to account for nonlinearity are also required to accurately assessing users’ Phubbing levels. The patterns produced by our modeling procedure may help scholars in accounting for phubbing definition, detection, and prediction more accurately.

Reputation matters the most: The reputation inertia effect

Online reputational systems are nowadays widely and effectively adopted by several online platforms to support and improve peoples’ interactions and communication. Despite the research approached and modeled social dynamics of reputational systems in different domains, adopting different frameworks, the role played by psycho-social factors, and personality traits, determining the individual susceptibility to online reputation is still elusive. To study such mediation effects, we implemented a modified online version of the Ultimatum Game, in which participants (215 adolescents) played before as proposers, and then as responders, always knowing the reputation of their interactors. Furthermore, after the reception phase, participants could evaluate the received offers, giving positive or negative feedback to their proposers. Despite the participants’ belief they were playing with their schoolmates, the interactors’ role was always fulfilled by bots characterized by standardized behaviors. Our results show how psychological traits influence the participants’ behavior in all the game phases, as well as in the rating dynamics. Reputation seems to have a direct effect only in the allocation behavior, while, in regards the other dynamics of the game (i.e., acceptance and rating), it comes into play in a complex interaction with the psychological dimensions.

Personality and reputation: A complex relationship in virtual environments

The aim of the present study was to test the psychometric properties of the Italian version of the Comic Style Markers (CSM; assessing fun, humor, nonsense, wit, irony, satire, sarcasm, and cynicism) and explore the relationship between the eight comic styles and the Big Five personality traits (extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience). The data were collected online from 607 Italian-speaking volunteer participants (214 men and 393 women, age 18 to 77 years; M = 36.50 years; SD = 13.28). Confirmatory factor analysis supported the eight-factor structure. Results showed that the psychometric properties of the Italian version of the scales were generally acceptable, and intercorrelations among the scales ranged from low (between cynicism and fun) to high (between sarcasm and satire). The correlations between the Big Five personality traits and the eight comic styles showed that openness to experience was positively related to all eight styles. Low agreeableness was the best predictor of the darker styles, and extraversion was mainly related to the lighter styles. Neuroticism correlated negatively with humor and wit, and positively with sarcasm and cynicism. Conscientiousness was negatively related to fun, nonsense, irony, and cynicism. The results indicated a fairly good performance of the Italian version of the CSM, which was proved to be an adequate assessment instrument for investigating further relationships among several personality traits in the Italian population.

The stranger on the Internet effect has been studied in relation to self-disclosure. Nonetheless, quantitative evidence about how people mentally represent and perceive strangers online is still missing. Given the dynamic development of web technologies, quantifying how much strangers can be considered suitable for pro-social acts such as self-disclosure appears fundamental for a whole series of phenomena ranging from privacy protection to fake news spreading. Using a modified and online version of the Ultimatum Game (UG), we quantified the mental representation of the stranger on the Internet effect and tested if people modify their behaviors according to the interactors’ identifiability (i.e., reputation). A total of 444 adolescents took part in a 2 × 2 design experiment where reputation was set active or not for the two traditional UG tasks. We discovered that, when matched with strangers, people donate the same amount of money as if the other has a good reputation. Moreover, reputation significantly affected the donation size, the acceptance rate and the feedback decision making as well.
