Big data workflows often require the assembly and exchange of complex, multi-element datasets. For example, in biomedical applications, the input to an analytic pipeline can be a dataset consisting thousands of images and genome sequences assembled from diverse repositories, requiring a description of the contents of the dataset in a concise and unambiguous form. Typical approaches to creating datasets for big data workflows assume that all data reside in a single location, requiring costly data marshaling and permitting errors of omission and commission because dataset members are not explicitly specified. We address these issues by proposing simple methods and tools for assembling, sharing, and analyzing large and complex datasets that scientists can easily integrate into their daily workflows. These tools combine a simple and robust method for describing data collections (BDBags), data descriptions (Research Objects), and simple persistent identifiers (Minids) to create a powerful ecosystem of tools and services for big data analysis and sharing. We present these tools and use biomedical case studies to illustrate their use for the rapid assembly, sharing, and analysis of large datasets.

Abstract Purpose The purpose of the paper is to provide a framework for addressing the disconnect between metadata and data science. Data science cannot progress without metadata research. This paper takes steps toward advancing the synergy between metadata and data science, and identifies pathways for developing a more cohesive metadata research agenda in data science. Design/methodology/approach This paper identifies factors that challenge metadata research in the digital ecosystem, defines metadata and data science, and presents the concepts big metadata, smart metadata, and metadata capital as part of a metadata lingua franca connecting to data science. Findings The “utilitarian nature” and “historical and traditional views” of metadata are identified as two intersecting factors that have inhibited metadata research. Big metadata, smart metadata, and metadata capital are presented as part of a metadata lingua franca to help frame research in the data science research space. Research limitations There are additional, intersecting factors to consider that likely inhibit metadata research, and other significant metadata concepts to explore. Practical implications The immediate contribution of this work is that it may elicit response, critique, revision, or, more significantly, motivate research. The work presented can encourage more researchers to consider the significance of metadata as a research worthy topic within data science and the larger digital ecosystem. Originality/value Although metadata research has not kept pace with other data science topics, there is little attention directed to this problem. This is surprising, given that metadata is essential for data science endeavors. This examination synthesizes original and prior scholarship to provide new grounding for metadata research in data science.

Big Metadata, Smart Metadata, and Metadata Capital: Toward Greater Synergy Between Data Science and Metadata

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the characteristics of managing records in a cloud computing environment and compare these with existing archiving models, exemplified by the open archival information system (OAIS) reference model.Design/methodology/approach – The authors compare the functional entities in OAIS with a layered model of cloud computing, in which services are abstracted and shared between layers.Findings – It is concluded that there are a number of areas where OAIS does not integrate well with cloud computing systems. Based on the findings, a new layered model for a cloud archiving system is defined using the concepts and information types from the OAIS reference model. The proposed model allows the sharing of functionality and information objects by making them available as services to higher layers. A Metadata Schema Registry as a Tool to Enhance Metadata Interoperability.

Manga---a Japanese word meaning comics, cartoons and graphic novels---is very popular in Japan and has been gaining broader recognition in the world. Digital publishing via the Internet and mobile phone networks is gaining wider acceptance, which means both providers and readers of manga need good network-based environments to provide, access and read manga. From this viewpoint, this paper discusses a metadata framework of manga to find, access, use and reuse manga in the networked digital environment.

The metadata framework for manga proposed in this paper is defined from three aspects---bibliographic description, structural description, and intellectual entities contained in the manga. We use the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) and TV-Anytime as the base schemes for bibliographic description and structural description, respectively. We examine authority and dictionary description schemes for the third aspect. This paper integrates these three base schemes as the metadata schema model for manga. The model proposed in this paper is primarily designed for digital manga because printed manga can be defined as a subset of digital manga.

A subject gateway in multiple languages: a prototype development and lessons learned

In this paper, we define some of the characteristics of archiving in a cloud computing environment. Based on these, we describe a model for a cloud archiving system using concepts and information types from the OAIS reference model. The proposed model allows the sharing of functionality and information objects by making these available as services to above layers. The model covers the entire document lifecycle, making archive functionality such as preservation planning possible at an early stage in the document lifecycle, helping to simplify records transfer. Finally, we use our model in a case study, using the records transfer process from Japanese government agencies to the National Archives of Japan as an example.
