The Grid 2: Blueprint for a New Computing Infrastructure

A communication infrastructure is an essential part to the success of the emerging smart grid. A scalable and pervasive communication infrastructure is crucial in both construction and operation of a smart grid. In this paper, we present the background and motivation of communication infrastructures in smart grid systems. We also summarize major requirements that smart grid communications must meet. From the experience of several industrial trials on smart grid with communication infrastructures, we expect that the traditional carbon fuel based power plants can cooperate with emerging distributed renewable energy such as wind, solar, etc, to reduce the carbon fuel consumption and consequent green house gas such as carbon dioxide emission. The consumers can minimize their expense on energy by adjusting their intelligent home appliance operations to avoid the peak hours and utilize the renewable energy instead. We further explore the challenges for a communication infrastructure as the part of a complex smart grid system. Since a smart grid system might have over millions of consumers and devices, the demand of its reliability and security is extremely critical. Through a communication infrastructure, a smart grid can improve power reliability and quality to eliminate electricity blackout. Security is a challenging issue since the on-going smart grid systems facing increasing vulnerabilities as more and more automation, remote monitoring/controlling and supervision entities are interconnected.

Multiagent systems: a modern approach to distributed artificial intelligence

A smart grid is a new form of electricity network with high fidelity power-flow control, self-healing, and energy reliability and energy security using digital communications and control technology. To upgrade an existing power grid into a smart grid, it requires significant dependence on intelligent and secure communication infrastructures. It requires security frameworks for distributed communications, pervasive computing and sensing technologies in smart grid. However, as many of the communication technologies currently recommended to use by a smart grid is vulnerable in cyber security, it could lead to unreliable system operations, causing unnecessary expenditure, even consequential disaster to both utilities and consumers. In this paper, we summarize the cyber security requirements and the possible vulnerabilities in smart grid communications and survey the current solutions on cyber security for smart grid communications.

A Survey on Cyber Security for Smart Grid Communications

Resonance conditions for a substrate-superstrate printed antenna geometry which allow for large antenna gain are presented. Asymptotic formulas for gain, beamwidth, and bandwidth are given, and the bandwidth limitation of the method is discussed. The method is extended to produce narrow patterns about the horizon, and directive patterns at two different angles.

The information system today need reliable, flexible and secure methods for making public and confidential information available to multiple groups of people: partners, customers, suppliers, and employees. There are a number of available remote access methods, and a range of point products for providing dialup access, VPNs, Web, Citrix, and wireless access. However, information systems face significant challenges integrating multiple point products and providing a manageable framework for effective access control software. As many types of people need easy access to business-critical information, the challenge is to assure that only the right people have access to the right information. This paper presents various methods and techniques for controlling system resources users' access to ensure that only authorized users can access secured resources. This article also covers the basics of access control, general methods and techniques used to manage access to resources, some common attacks that are launched against access control systems and the generalisation the basic security techniques specification for the protection of confidential resources in the mediation systems.

Security techniques and specifications for the resources protection in mediation systems

In this paper, a direct 3D finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) approach is implemented to investigate the electromagnetic behavior of arbitrary conformal microstrip filters and spiral inductors. To this end, the frequency dependence of the scattering-matrix parameters of these microstrip circuit configurations has been studied in depth. The proposed model approaches the curved regions of the studied structures using a staircase discretization scheme. The obtained numerical results have been validated by comparisons with measured results in the literature, which considered extreme cases where the considered structures are planar. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Rigorous modeling of arbitrary conformal microstrip filters and spiral inductors using the fdtd method

MapReduce has been widely used as a powerful parallel data processing model and is adopted by most cloud providers to build cloud computing framework. However, in open cloud systems, security of computation becomes a great challenge. Moreover, MapReduce data-processing services are long-running, which increases the possibility that an adversary launches an attack on the workers and make them behave maliciously and then tamper with the computation integrity of user tasks where their executions are generally performed in different administration domains out of the user control. Thus, the results of the computation might be erroneous and dishonest. In this paper, we propose a new mechanism based on weighted t-first voting method for ensuring the integrity of MapReduce in open cloud computing environment. Our mechanism can defeat both collusive and non-collusive malicious entities and therefore guarantee high computation accuracy.
