Commercial polymers have been used in pavement modification for decades; however, a major drawback of these polymers is their high cost. Waste plastic polymers could be used as a sustainable and cost-effective additive for improving asphalt properties, attaining combined environmental–economic benefits. Since 2019, in Australia, trial segments of roads have been built using waste materials, including plastic, requiring that laboratory evaluations first be carried out. This study aims to examine and evaluate the effect of using a domestic waste plastic, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), in modifying C320 bitumen. The assessment of several contents of PET-modified bitumen is carried out in two phases: modified bitumen binders and modified asphalt mixtures. Dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and rolling thin film oven tests (RTFOT) were utilised to investigate the engineering properties and visco-elastic behaviour of plastic-modified bitumen binders. For evaluating the engineering properties of the plastic-modified asphalt mixtures, the Marshall stability, Marshall flow, Marshall quotient and rutting tests were conducted. The results demonstrated that 6–8% is the ideal percentage of waste plastic proposed to amend and enhance the stiffness and elasticity behaviour of asphalt binders. Furthermore, the 8% waste PET-modified asphalt mixture showed the most improvement in stability and rutting resistance, as indicated by increased Marshal stability, increased Marshall quotient and decreased rut depth. Future fatigue and modulus stiffness tests on waste plastic-modified asphalt mixtures are suggested to further investigate the mechanical properties.

Laboratory Properties of Waste PET Plastic-Modified Asphalt Mixes

The construction of hundreds of kilometres of roads around the world every year results in the consumption of large amounts of raw materials and the depletion of natural resources. In addition, technologically advanced countries such as Australia are currently facing a major issue regarding the waste materials produced daily by their citizens. The disposal of these waste materials is a critical issue faced by municipalities in modern cities. Currently, using waste materials in civil and construction engineering is of great interest to researchers and industry. This study investigates the impact of using waste polyethylene terephthalate to modify asphalt mixtures following Australian design guidelines and criteria. Different types of asphalt are used to investigate and determine the mechanical properties of modified asphalt mixtures. The Marshall stability, Marshall flow, Marshall quotient, and wheel-tracking tests were tested. The Marshall stability, Marshall flow, and MQ of the Marshall test results exhibited significant improvements when using PET in modified SMA and AC mixtures. It can be seen that the 8% PET produced a mixture with the highest stability of 19.78 kN. The lowest rut depth was about 2.08 mm for samples modified with 8% PET.

Evaluation of the Performance of Two Australian Waste-Plastic-Modified Hot Mix Asphalts

This study aims to investigate the effect and the possibility of using waste plastic as a sustainable cost-effective polymer to modify bitumen binders. Different types of waste plastic have been used in this modification, including polyethylene terephthalate (PET), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and low-density polyethylene (LDPE). The modification targets the physical characteristics, rheological properties, and binders’ resistance to ageing. Both long- and short-term ageing are investigated to determine the durability and ageing resistance of the modified binder using rolling thin film oven tests (RTFOT) and pressure ageing vessels (PAVs). Penetration tests and dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) tests were conducted to investigate and evaluate the complex shear modulus, stiffness, elasticity, and viscous properties. The results show that 2% and 4% of HDPE and LDPE are recommended as ideal contents for good performance, as reflected by the penetration tests before and after ageing. However, higher contents, such as 6% and 8% HDPE and LDPE, are not significant in improving the stiffness, elasticity, and ageing resistance. Therefore, samples of 6–8% HDPE and LDPE are more vulnerable to permanent deformation. Furthermore, using waste PET exhibits obvious improvements in terms of the physical characteristics, rheological properties, stiffness, elasticity, and ageing resistance with up to 8% PET-modified bitumen. Based on the results, the ideal type and content is 6–8% PET waste plastic.

A Comparison on Physical and Rheological Properties of Three Different Waste Plastic-Modified Bitumen

One of the most common damages in asphalt mixes is the destructive effect of moisture on the binder cohesion and binder–aggregate adhesion which is called moisture damage. There are various methods to improve adhesion and reduce moisture damage in asphalt mixes. The most common of them is using an appropriate additive for binder modification. Accordingly, the current research was conducted to investigate the effect of two nanomaterials (Nano CuO, and Nano SnO2) in 2 different percentages on 2 types of aggregates (granite and limestone) and a type of base binder. In order to investigate the effect of nanomaterials, indirect tensile cyclic loading (the same as resilient modulus test) in dry and wet conditions and surface free energy (SFE) method were used. The moisture sensitivity indicator which shows stripping percentage of aggregate surface in loading cycles using SFE results and indirect tensile cyclic loading, has been considered as the moisture sensitivity indicator in this research. Results of mechanical tests used in this research show that nanomaterials have significantly increased asphalt mixes strength in comparison to control specimens. Results obtained from SFE method show that nanomaterials increase the cohesion free energy; this change causes a reduction in the possibility of failure in binder membrane. Additionally, nanoparticles have increased and reduced basic component and acidic component of SFE, respectively. This leads to improvement of their adhesion with acidic aggregates, which is sensitive to moisture damage.

Investigating the Effect of Metal Nanomaterials on the Moisture Sensitivity Process of Asphalt Mixes

When the asphalt binder does not comply with the required specification for pavement, the suggested remedy is the implication of modifiers to enhance the quality. In the present investigation, asphalt cement binder was modified with varying percentages of two types of modifiers, Sulfur (3, 5, 7, and 10) % and Carbon Black (5, 10, and 15) % by weight of asphalt cement. The image processing technique was implemented to evaluate the surface free energy components (dynamic and static contact angles) of the treated asphalt cement by implementing the sessile drop and Wilhelmy plate techniques. The aim of this investigation is to assess how the image processing can detect the variation in the adhesive properties through the assessment of surface free energy of the asphalt cement due to the addition of the modifiers. For the comparison process, the surface free energy components of the control asphalt are also determined. Considering the test result obtained, it was concluded that Carbon black is more appropriate additive, it gives an ultimate total surface free energy increment of (7.7 and 6) % as compared with (2.8 and 3.1) % for sulfur when Sessile drop and Wilhelmy plate methods are implemented respectively when compared with the control binder.

Assessing the surface free energy of modified asphalt binder with image processing technique

One of the effective parameters in the occurrence of fatigue cracking distress is the asphalt binder properties used, which must be controlled by appropriate asphalt binder or additives. In this study, the effect of using Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) was investigated on the fatigue cracking potential of asphalt mixtures. Two types of aggregates, asphalt binder performance grade (PG) 64-16, and UHMWPE additive in two percent of the asphalt binder were used in this study, which were tested at two temperatures and five different stress levels. Marshall mix design and indirect tensile fatigue test (ITFT) were used to determine the optimum content of the asphalt binder and the fatigue life of asphalt mixtures, respectively. The results of this study indicated that the application of polymer additives increased the fatigue life of the asphalt mixtures. The fatigue life of specimens made with granite aggregates was longer than those made with limestone aggregates, and the increased life due to the use of UHMWPE was longer in samples made with granite aggregates. As expected, increasing in temperature and stress levels reduced the fatigue life of the asphalt mixtures. This decrease was much lower in samples made of asphalt binder modified with polymeric materials than in control samples.

Investigating the Effect of Using Waste Ultra-high-molecular-weight Polyethylene on the Fatigue Life of Asphalt Mixture

There are several experimental methods for improving the moisture strength of asphalt mixtures. Utilization of anti-stripping materials is the most prevalent method. In the present paper, the influence of polymer materials on asphalt binder was investigated using repetitive loading test in wet and dry conditions along with thermodynamic parameters based on the Surface Free Energy components of asphalt binder and aggregates. The results obtained from the present study indicated that using Styrene Butadiene Rubber polymer has improved the asphalt mixtures strength against the moisture damage, especially in the specimens made of granite aggregates. Also, Styrene Butadiene Rubber polymer increased the cohesion free energy and reduced the energy released by the system during the stripping event, which represented a decrease in the tendency for stripping. The stripping percentage index, which is obtained by a combination of the results of the repetitive loading test in wet and dry conditions along with the results of thermodynamic parameters, represented that the specimens made of controlled asphalt binder in the loading cycles under wet conditions had a higher stripping rate. It was also concluded that the modulus loss rate in the control asphalt mixtures was faster than the modified specimens.
