Recent advances in modeling and simulation of nanofluid flows—Part II: Applications

This paper presents a critical review of heat transfer applications of nanofluids. The effects of nanoparticle concentration, size, shape, and nanofluid flow rate on Nusselt number, heat transfer coefficient, thermal conductivity, thermal resistance, friction factor and pressure drop from numerous studies reported recently are presented. Effects of various geometric parameters on heat transfer enhancement of system using nanofluids have also been reviewed. Heat transfer devices covered in this paper include radiators, circular tube heat exchangers, plate heat exchangers, shell and tube heat exchangers and heat sinks. Various correlations used for experimental validation or developed in reviewed studies are also compiled, compared and analyzed. The pros and cons associated to the applications of nanofluids in heat transfer devices are presented in details to determine the future direction of research in this arena.

In this paper, a novel approximate solution to determine the Nusselt number for thermally developed, slug (lowPrandtl), laminar, single phase flow in channels of arbitrary cross section is presented. Using the Saint-Venant principle in torsion of beams, it is shown that the thermally developed Nusselt number for low-Prandtl flow is only a function of the geometrical parameters of the channel cross section, i.e., area, perimeter and non-dimensional polar moment of inertia. The new proposed model is compared with the existing numerical results for elliptic, rectangular, regular polygonal, flat plate, isosceles triangular, equilateral triangular and circular sector channels. The model predicts the Nusselt number for the above mentioned channels within the about 10% or better with the exception of the circular sector in very small aspect ratios. The new model is expected to be accurate for other singly connected channels and can be used to determine the fully developed turbulent Nusselt number for liquid metal flows. Finally, the proposed model is used to determine the slug flow Nusselt number for unavailable geometries in the literature such as rhombic, circular segment, annular sector channel as well as rectangular channel with semicircular ends.

Examination of the effect of cell thickness on the performance of a tandem nano-gap thermophotovoltaic system

ABSTRACT The present study investigates convective heat transfer of nanofluid Couette flow. For this purpose, Ar-Cu nanofluid (argon as base fluid with spherical copper nanoparticles) is simulated using the LAMMPS package. The convective heat transfer coefficient is calculated for nanofluid and base fluid. The results show that the heat transfer coefficient increases with the addition of nanoparticles. This is due to changes in the structure and behaviour of the nanofluid relative to the base fluid. One of the important effects of the presence of nanoparticles is the constitution of solid-like layer adjacent to the nanoparticles, which increases the capability of heat transfer. Also, the velocity and mobility of base fluid are affected by the presence of nanoparticles, and velocity profile deviates from the linear mode. The effects of volume fraction and diameter of nanoparticles on convective heat transfer are also investigated. For a constant diameter of nanoparticles, the convective heat transfer coefficient of nanofluid increases by increasing the volume fraction. Likewise, in a constant volume fraction, the convective heat transfer coefficient decreases with increasing the nanoparticles diameter. This is because of the reduction in adsorption of fluid atoms by copper nanoparticles and decreasing the solid-like layer thickness.
