The analysis of vertical price relationship along the supply chain from producers to consumers has become a popular tool of evaluating the efficiency and degree of competition in agrifood systems over recent decades. There is a wealth of literature on the farm-retail price spread for different commodities and countries. However, with one exception (Bojnec, 2002) none have studied price transmission and marketing margins in the transition economies. It is a common belief that because of the distorted markets inherited from the pre 1989 period, the deficiency of the price-discovery mechanisms, and unpredictable policy interventions, marketing margins are generally larger in the transition economies than in competitive markets. Using cointegration analysis, we find that producer and retail pork meat prices are cointegrated, the retail prices entering the cointegration space as weakly exogenous variables. Structural tests imposing homogeneity conditions are carried out and show a competitive pricing strategy. Price transmission modeling suggests that, despite the common belief, price transmission on the Hungarian pork meat market is symmetric. Marketing margins and price transmission on the Hungarian pork meat market

This article investigates the non-linear adjustment between farm and retail prices in the lamb sector in Spain, using a three-regime Threshold Autoregressive Model. The results indicate that, in the long run, price transmission is perfect and any supply or demand shocks are fully transmitted along the marketing chain. In the short run, price adjustments between the farm and the retail levels are asymmetric and reveal a demand-pull transmission mechanism. On the other hand, retailers benefit from any shock, whether positive or negative, that affects supply or demand conditions. Copyright 2007, Oxford University Press.

The analysis of asymmetries in the price-transmission mechanism at different levels of the marketing chain provides a good indicator of market efficiency in vertically related markets. The objective of this paper is to investigate the non-linear adjustments of prices in the poultry marketing chain in Spain. The methodology used is based on the multivariate approach to specify and estimate a threshold autoregressive model. Price relationships at feed industry, producer, and retail levels are considered. Results indicate that, in the long run, price transmission is perfect and any supply or demand shocks are fully transmitted to all prices in the system. In the short run, price adjustments between the feed and the farmer levels are fairly symmetric and are representative of a cost-push transmission mechanism. On the other hand, retailers benefit from any shock, whether positive or negative, that affects supply or demand conditions when price spreads are increasing, while price behavior is closely related to competitive markets when faced with declining price spreads. Vertical integration and non‐linear price adjustments: The Spanish poultry sector

The analysis of asymmetries in the price transmission mechanism at different levels of the marketing chain provides some interesting information about the degree of competition in vertical related markets. The objective of this paper is to investigate the non-linear adjustments of prices along the lamb sector in Spain. The methodology used is based on the multivariate approach to specify and estimate a Threshold Autoregressive Model. Price relationships at farm, wholesale and retail levels are considered. Results indicate that in the long-run price transmission is perfect and any supply or demand shocks are fully transmitted to all prices in the system. In the shortrun, analyses suggest that the high degree of horizontal concentration among retailers allow them to have market power. Responses to any shock generate an increase of the retail price spread which is more evident when prices show an upward trend.

Price transmission asymmetries in the Spanish lamb sector /доклад на 10 конгрессе ЕААЕ, Exploring Diversity in the European Agri-Food System, Zaragoza, Spain, 28-31 August 2002

This article aims to analyse the impact of changes in the monetary policy and the exchange rate on agricultural supply, prices and exports. The methodology used is based on the multivariate cointegration approach. Ten variables are considered – interest and exchange rates, money supply, inflation, agricultural output and input prices, agricultural supply and exports, income and the rate of commercial openness. The sample period covers annual data from 1967 to 2002. Due to the short sample period, two subsystems are considered. First, long-run relationships are identified in each subsystem. Second, both subsystems are merged in order to calculate the short-run dynamics. The results indicate that changes in macroeconomic variables have an effect on the agricultural sector, but the reverse effect does not hold.

El sector ovino aragones tiene un caracter dual. Al lado de explotaciones tradicionales con un caracter netamente familiar, escasa incorporacion de personal asalariado e instalaciones ya amortizadas, en los ultimos anos se ha ido configurando un nuevo sector caracterizado por explotaciones de mayor dimension, instalaciones modernas, cierta tecnificacion e incorporacion de personal asalariado. La crisis actual que vive el sector junto con la reciente reforma de la 0CM de ovino ha generado cierta incertidumbre en los ganaderos sobre su futuro. El objetivo de este trabajo se centro, precisamente, en analizar cuales son sus expectativas de futuro ante los nuevos acontecimientos. A partir de los resultados de una encuesta realizada a una muestra representativa de los sistemas de produccion existentes en Aragon, se caracteriza sociodemograficamente al responsable de las explotaciones y se establece una jerarquia sobre cuales son los objetivos empresariales y familiares que guian la actuacion de dichos ganaderos. Finalmente, se analizan sus expectativas de futuro y mediante un modelo logico se determinan que factores inciden sobre dichas expectativas
