On the evaluation of the global impact of control strategies applied to wastewater treatment plants

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of the main control actions used in wastewater treatment plants on the three main indicators used for performance evaluation: water quality, operational cost and, especially, greenhouse gas emissions are presented.
Journal ArticleDOI

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operation: Simple Control Schemes with a Holistic Perspective

TL;DR: The results show the possibilities of the N/E index to be used as an indicator of global performance of WWTPs, and introduces plantwide considerations in alternative control strategies formulated to drive the plant to operating conditions that optimize the overall process efficiency.
Journal ArticleDOI

Monitoring dioxins and furans near an old municipal solid waste incinerator: Temporal variation in vegetation

TL;DR: In this paper, the temporal variation in the levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-pdioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in vegetation grown near an old municipal solid waste incinerator (Montcada, Barcelona, Spain) was determined.
Journal ArticleDOI

Improved PID controller tuning rules for performance degradation/robustness increase trade-off

TL;DR: In this paper, a PID control design is provided that looks for a robustness increase, allowing some degradation in the system's combined performance, and the proposed approach is complementary to the work presented by Arrieta and Vilanova (Simple PID tuning rules with guaranteed $$M_s$$ robustness achievement, in 18th IFAC world congress, 2011; Ind Eng Chem Res 51(6):2666-2674, 2012).
Journal ArticleDOI

Joint Environmental and Economical Analysis of Wastewater Treatment Plants Control Strategies: A Benchmark Scenario Analysis

TL;DR: In this article, a joint environmental and economic analysis of different wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) control strategies is carried out based on the application of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as a method to evaluate the environmental impact and the Benchmark Simulation Model No. 1 (BSM1).
