This study presents an adaptive perturb and observe (P&O)-fuzzy control maximum power point tracking (MPPT) for photovoltaic (PV) boost dc-dc converter. P&O is known as a very simple MPPT algorithm and used widely. Fuzzy logic is also simple to be developed and provides fast response. The proposed technique combines both of their advantages. It should improve MPPT performance especially with existing of noise. For evaluation and comparison analysis, conventional P&O and fuzzy logic control algorithms have been developed too. All the algorithms were simulated in MATLAB-Simulink, respectively, together with PV module of Kyocera KD210GH-2PU connected to PV boost dc-dc converter. For hardware implementation, the proposed adaptive P&O-fuzzy control MPPT was programmed in TMS320F28335 digital signal processing board. The other two conventional MPPT methods were also programmed for comparison purpose. Performance assessment covers overshoot, time response, maximum power ratio, oscillation and stability as described further in this study. From the results and analysis, the adaptive P&O-fuzzy control MPPT shows the best performance with fast time response, less overshoot and more stable operation. It has high maximum power ratio as compared to the other two conventional MPPT algorithms especially with existing of noise in the system at low irradiance.

Development of adaptive perturb and observe-fuzzy control maximum power point tracking for photovoltaic boost dc-dc converter

The requirement for renewable energy sources is very high in recent years due to the acute energy crisis. Photovoltaic power is regarded as a chief source of energy in several countries with high solar power density. The main obstruction for reach of solar PV systems is their low efficiency and high capital cost. Therefore, controlling Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) for the solar array has become an essential aspect in a PV generation as Maximum Power Point (MPP) changes with the solar radiation and temperature. In this paper, Perturbation and Observation (P&O) algorithm is used for maximum power point tracking as it has the potential to adjust the solar array reference voltage to attain maximum power point. P&O system has certain limitation which is overcome in this paper with the utilization of fuzzy based P&O. But, this produces oscillations in voltage conversion. To overcome this difficulty, a better converter should be used in voltage conversion. Cuk converter is one of the existing efficient converters in PV systems. One of main drawback in cuk converter is more duty cycles are required for better conversion and some oscillations will persist in voltage conversion. To overcome these drawbacks, hybrid boost mode cuk converter is used in this paper. In hybrid boost mode cuk converter, step up structure is used which will result in better conversion ratio and better damping of oscillations. The main advantage of this proposed system is that the efficiency of the hybrid boost mode cuk converter is increased. The system is simulated under different climatic conditions. The simulation model of controller is built in MATLAB / Simulink background, and the simulation result shows the reduction in oscillations and improvement in power conversion.

Maximum power point tracking in PV system using intelligence based P&O technique and hybrid cuk converter

In this paper, analysis and hardware implementation of a single phase inverter based on Cuk converter for PV system is presented. The buck-boost characteristic of such a converter promotes flexibility for both grid tied as well as standalone connections where the ac voltage is either higher than or lesser than the dc input voltage. Further Cuk based topologies have the better efficiency and voltage regulation, which is a lacking feature in a basic boost or a buck configuration. The proposed system not only offers continuous input and output current but also controlled voltage over a wider range. Hence this topology can serve as an expedient alternative converter stage for photovoltaic applications. In the proposed bidirectional two-switch Cuk converter, DSPIC30F2010 controller is used for controlling the duty ratio of switching pulses. Also, this controller generates PWM signals for the switches of single phase H-bridge inverter. The hardware results for the developed prototype of a Cuk converter based single phase inverter are presented. The developed scheme can easily be scalable to a much larger rating of the PV system.

Design and Implementation of Single Phase Inverter Based on Cuk Converter for PV System

Maximum Power Point Tracking of a Photovoltaic System Under Partial Shading Condition Using Whale Optimization Algorithm

Multilevel, transformer-less inverters are becoming more and more a subject of interest in grid connected photovoltaic system due to their low cost and high efficiency features. However, most of the designed grid tied systems show more than one stage conversion process to inject the amount of power generated to the grid. Mainly, a DC-DC conversion stage is always requested between the Photovoltaic (PV) panel and the inverter. In this paper, a single-stage grid connected design based on seven level packed U-cell inverter controlled by a finite-set model predictive algorithm with a maximum power point tracking capability is presented as a competitive single-stage/phase grid-connected topology. The overall design is less complex compared to existing topologies where a maximum power point operation of the PV system is well achieved without the use of a boost converter. A predictive algorithm takes in action of the inverter control. Simulation results in MATLAB/SIMULINK are presented to validate the proposed design in both constant and variable irradiation conditions.

Design of a 7-Level Single-Stage/Phase PUC Grid-Connected PV Inverter with FS-MPC Control

The need for renewable energy sources is on the rise because of the acute energy crisis in the world today. India plans to produce 20 Gigawatts Solar power by the year 2020, whereas we have only realized less than half a Gigawatt of our potential as of March 2010. Solar energy is a vital untapped resource in a tropical country like ours. The main hindrance for the penetration and reach of solar PV systems is their low efficiency and high capital cost. In this thesis, we examine a schematic to extract maximum obtainable solar power from a PV module and use the energy for a DC application. This project investigates in detail the concept of Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) which significantly increases the efficiency of the solar photovoltaic system.
