Context-aware scheduling in Fog computing: A survey, taxonomy, challenges and future directions

Pavement design is essentially and usually a structural long-term evaluation process which is needed to ensure that traffic loads are efficiently distributed at all levels of the total road structure. Furthermore, to get a complete analysis of its durability behavior, long-term monitoring should be facilitated, not only from the top by falling weight deflectometer (FWD) or core drilling but preferably from inside the structure and at exactly the same positions during a long-time interval. Considering that it is very hard to devise an efficient method to determine realistic in-situ mechanical properties of pavements, the determination of strain at the bottom of asphalt pavement layers through non-destructive tests is of a great interest. As it is known, fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors are the most promising candidates to effectively replace conventional strain gauges for a long-term monitoring application in a harsh environment. The main goals of this paper are to compile an overview of the recent developments worldwide in the application of fiber optics sensors (FOS) in asphalt pavement monitoring systems; to find out if those systems provide repeatable and suitable results for a long-term monitoring; if there are certain solutions to validate an inverse modelling approach based on the results of FWD and FOS.

Fiber Optics Sensors in Asphalt Pavement: State-of-the-Art Review

The increase of Internet of Things devices and the rise of more computationally intense applications presents challenges for future Internet of Things architectures. We envision a future in which edge, fog, and cloud devices work together to execute future applications. Because the entire application cannot run on smaller edge or fog devices, we will need to split the application into smaller application components. These application components will send event messages to each other to create a single application from multiple application components. The execution location of the application components can be optimized to minimize the resource consumption. In this paper, we describe the Distributed Uniform Stream (DUST) framework that creates an abstraction between the application components and the middleware which is required to make the execution location transparent to the application component. We describe a real-world application that uses the DUST framework for platform transparency. Next to the DUST framework, we also describe the distributed DUST Coordinator, which will optimize the resource consumption by moving the application components to a different execution location. The coordinators will use an adapted version of the Contract Net Protocol to find local minima in resource consumption.

Distributed Uniform Streaming Framework: An Elastic Fog Computing Platform for Event Stream Processing and Platform Transparency

The introduction of the internet had a significant impact on people's lives. The next generation internet, also called the Internet of Things (IoT), takes automation to a whole new level. Currently, IoT is still in its infancy. Still, IoT architectures are being implemented for specific applications and/or use-cases. However, as the number of applications and IoT frameworks increases, so does the number of interfaces, protocols and standards. As a result, interoperability between different platforms has become significantly more complex. In road construction and logistical processes, analysis of collected data and real-time communication between the various actors (e.g. paver, contractor, transporter) allows them to operate their machines more effectively, which significantly improves road quality. However, the significant differences in communication protocols and data storage prevent a straightforward interconnection and interoperability between the various applications involved. This paper introduces a middleware that allows on-demand communication, authentication and information exchange in such heterogeneous environments. We demonstrate and validate this middleware with a use-case and field test in road construction in the context of the RoadIT Technology Transformation (TETRA) project.

Towards Real-time Smart Road Construction: Efficient Process Management through the Implementation of Internet of Things

The increased adoption of the IoT paradigm requires us to take a good look at the network weight it creates. As adoption increases, so does the network load and server cost, causing a jump in required expenses. A solution for this is Fog Computing, where we distribute the cloud load over the network devices so that the tasks get pre-processed before reaching the cloud level, or might not even have to reach the cloud level. To aid with this research, we wrote a simulator that calculates the optimal spread of the application over the network devices, and shows us how this spread will occur. This spread will be based on context, where for example processor-bound machines get smaller tasks and energy-bound machines get energy-efficient tasks. We use this simulator to compare algorithms used for placing the application.

Context-Aware Distribution In Constrained IoT Environments

Demonstrating Innovative Technologies for the Flemish Asphalt Sector in the CyPaTs Project

The recent advancements in Internet of Things (IoT) show us a glimpse of a future in which all our devices are connected to the internet, providing users with services that make life easier, more comfortable and safer. Although this interconnectivity seems simple, in practice management of the IoT hardware and the enormous amounts of data it generates is challenging. To bring the connected future into reality and build advanced and useful services, better resource usage estimation (memory, bandwidth, storage etc.) and resource management is required. We propose a IoT optimization methodology, where resources are estimated at each level of the IoT architecture (i.e. nodes, edges and cloud). Using these estimates, the executed code is redistributed across the network in order to optimize the cost and efficiency of the IoT environment, while taking into a specific context (e.g. environment). Initially, we aim to apply this methodology for statically defined contexts. In our future research we aim to perform the optimization at runtime, redistributing tasks across the IoT network dynamically as the context of the nodes changes.
