Bioactive compounds of purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) according to the production system: A review

Featured Application Portulaca oleracea is a valuable wild species, spread worldwide, and is consumed in different regions of the world. As a wild edible species, it is a promising alternative to substitute conventional crops in harsh conditions due to its resilience to adverse conditions. In the present review, we tried to compile the most up-to-date literature regarding the management and cultivation practices of Portulaca oleracea. The presented information will be useful to farmers and stakeholders for the commercial cultivation of the species and its introduction as a complementary/alternative crop in the current production systems, while at the same time could be used for the phytoremediation and reclamation of degraded and abandoned agricultural land. Abstract Soil is an essential resource, and its degradation is challenging modern agriculture, while its impact is expected to increase in the near future. One of the strategies to address this issue is to incorporate new alternative crops able to tolerate arduous conditions, as well as for the use of sustainable agricultural practices in order to recover and/or improve soil health. Additionally, the increasing market for new functional/healthy natural foods promotes the search for potential alternative crop species with promising bioactive compounds content. For this purpose, wild edible plants are a key option because they have already been consumed for hundreds of years in traditional gastronomy and there is well-established evidence of their health-promoting effects. Moreover, since they are not a cultivated species, they are able to grow under natural conditions without human intervention. Among them, common purslane is an interesting wild edible species and a good candidate for integration in commercial farming systems. With worldwide spread, it is able to tolerate drought, salinity and heat stress and is already used in traditional dishes, while it is highly appreciated for its high nutritional value due to its bioactive compound content, especially omega-3 fatty acids. In this review, we aim to present the breeding and cultivation practices of purslane, as well as the effects of abiotic stressors on yield and chemical composition of the edible parts. Finally, we present information that helps to optimize purslane cultivation and facilitate its management in degraded soils for their exploitation in the existing farming systems.

Agronomical Practices and Management for Commercial Cultivation of Portulaca oleracea as a Crop: A Review

Аbstract. In this article, due to year-by-year global climate change and the increase in water shortage, the water demand for cotton in the Bukhara region was developed based on FAO methodology, i.e., CropWat 8.0 model program, taking into account soil-hydrogeological conditions the results of scientific research are presented. Water-saving, scientifically based irrigation procedures for cotton irrigation were developed according to the generally accepted scale of hydromodular regions N.F. Bespalov. The seasonal irrigation norms of cotton in the Bukhara region by hydromodule regions were 3900 (VIII) - 7200 (I) m3/ha.

Development of scientific-based irrigation systems on hydromodule districts of ghoza in irrigated areas of bukhara region based on computer technologies

The main purpose of the study was to evaluate of effectiveness of the halophyte plants on saline soils and use as a salt-tolerant plants. The experimental studies carried out on the halophyte plants (Tetragonia tetragonioides and Portulaca oleracea) and the salt-sensitive crop (Lactuca sativa, L) in the greenhouse. Two experimental studies were conducted on the effects of salt on germination, total yield and mineral composition of the halophyte plants and salt-sensitive crop. Three salinity treatments (saline water solution with NaCl: T1 - 5 dS m−1; T2 - 9.8 dS m−1; and T3 - 20 dS m−1) and a control treatment (T0 - 0.6 dS m−1) were used for the experimental study. The both halophyte plants showed the potential salt (ions) removing species with high yields when grown on saline soils. The results showed that the above halophytes varieties contributed to improved quality and yield of the salt-sensitive crop. Thus, this method has proven to be one of the important solutions in preventing and managing salinity and ensuring the sustainability of agricultural systems. Analysis of the obtained results showed that halophyte plants could be used to improve the management and stability of saline soils and grow them as food crops.

Use of halophyte plants on saline soils and evaluation of salt removal efficiency

The main purpose of the two consecutive experimental studies presented here was to compare the effect of salinity on nutrients in leaves of the halophytic plant species Portulaca oleracea L. and in soil. The first experiment was conducted to study the effect of salinity on plant growth, biomass accumulation, yield, root layer development, salt accumulation, and the dynamics of changes in mineral substances in plants and soil. In the second experiment, P. oleracea seeds were sown directly into salinized soil (treated immediately before plant growth) to determine the nutrient levels in leaves and soil. Three salinity treatments (saline water solution with NaCl: T1, 5 dS m−1; T2, 9.8 dS m−1; and T3, 20 dS m−1) and a control treatment (T0, 1 dS m−1) were used in the first experiment. The soil in the second experiment was used in a previous study (performed immediately before P. oleracea growth) (salinized soil: T1, 7.2 dS m−1; T2, 8.8 dS m−1; T3, 15.6 dS m−1; T0, 1.9 dS m−1). The plants were irrigated with tap water at amounts in the range of 0.25–0.50 L/pot. Analysis of the experimental results showed that P. oleracea is resistant to salinity, is able to remove ions (400–500 kg ha−1 NaCl), and can be grown in saline soil. The results indicated that P. oleracea is able to grow in high-salinity soil. This finding was confirmed by the dry matter obtained under high-salinity conditions. Salinity stress affected nutrient uptake in leaves and soil.
