The bibliography represents a search of the literature published in the period 1962-1976, the effort being largely limited to documents published in the United States. This paper is concerned with the investigation of the forced time‐harmonic vertical vibration of a rigid disc embedded at an arbitrary depth in a semi‐infinite medium. By virtue of transform methods, the generalized mixed boundary‐value problem is formulated as a set of dual integral equations, which, in turn, are reduced to a Fredholm equation of the second kind. With the aid of contour integration, the governing integral equation is solved numerically. Selected results for the complex compliance are presented to illustrate the various effects of embedment on the dynamic response. In addition to furnishing a unified view of the static and dynamic solutions for zero and infinite embedments, the present analysis reveals a dynamic boundary‐layer phenomenon, which is apt to be of interest to this class of problems in general.

Forced vertical vibration of rigid discs with arbitrary embedment

Different from previous two-dimensional thermal weight function (TWF) method, a three-dimensional (3D) TWF method is proposed for solving elliptical interface crack problems in bimaterial structures under a transient thermal loading. The present 3D TWF method based on the Betti's reciprocal theorem is a powerful tool for dealing with the transient thermal loading due to the stress intensity factors (SIFs) of whole transient process obtained through the static finite element computation. Several representative examples demonstrate that the 3D TWF method can be used to predict the SIFs of elliptical interface crack subjected to transient thermal loading with high accuracy. Moreover, numerical results indicate that the computing efficiency can be enhanced when dealing with transient problems, especially for large amount of time instants.

Thermal stresses in a solid weakened by an external circular crack

The problem of determining, within the limits of the classical theory of elasticity, the displacements and stresses in the interior of a semi-infinite solid ( z ≧ 0) when a part of the boundary surface ( z = 0) is forced to rotate through a given angle ω about an axis which is normal to the undeformed plane surface of the solid, has been discussed by several authors [ 7, 8, 9, 1, 11, and others]. All of this work is concerned with rotating a circular area of the boundary surface and the field equation to be solved is, essentially, J. H. Mitchell's equation for the torsion of bars of varying circular cross-sections.
