The analysis of the magnetic properties and the electronic structure in the TbxGd1−xFe3 intermetallics

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses intersublattice exchange coupling in the lanthanide-transition metal intermetallic. The lanthanide atoms exhibit an incomplete filling of the electronic 4f shell, the corresponding wave functions being well localized in the interior of the atoms. As a result, there are both spin and orbital contributions to the magnetic moments and there is a large magnetic anisotropy. The band description for the invariable antiparallel-coupling between the lanthanide spins and the transition metal spins is given. The mechanism of the 4f-3d intersublattice exchange interactions is presented. The notation for describing the exchange interactions is introduced. The chapter discusses different methods of evaluation of the exchange coupling parameters from the analysis of Curie temperatures and from the high-field free-powder (HFFP) method. A survey of the studies of the intersublattice interactions is given. The chapter presents general considerations of the 4f-3d exchange interactions derived from analyzing the ordering temperatures. These results will also be compared with data obtained from the high-field free-powder method and discussed in terms of the various effects on the 3d-5d hybridization. Concluding remarks and extensions to further detailed investigations on this topic of exchange interactions are presented.

THE STRENGTH OF THE INTERSUBLATTICE INTERACTION IN THE (Er, Y) Fe2 COMPOUNDS

Ferrimagnetic compounds of the series Er(FexCu1−x)2 (x 1.0, 0.95, 0.9, 0.85, and 0.8) are investigated by magnetization, a. c. magnetic susceptibility, Mossbauer effect, and magnetostriction measurements. With decreasing x-value, the Curie temperature, the effective iron moments as well as the average magnetic moment of the iron sublattice decreases monotonously.
