ASCE's standard Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Stainless Steel Structural Members (ASCE 8-90) provides design criteria for the determination of the strength of stainless steel structural members and connections for use in buildings and other statically loaded structures. The members may be cold-formed to shape from annealed and cold-rolled sheet, strip, plate, or flat bar stainless steel material. Design criteria are provided for axially loaded tension or compression members, flexural members subjected to bending and shear, and members subjected to combined axial load and bending. The specification provides the design strength criteria using the load and resistance factor design (LRFD) and the allowable stress design (ASD) methods. The reasoning behind, and the justification for, various provisions of the specification are also presented. The design strength requirements of this standard are intended for use by structural engineers and those engaged in preparing and administrating local building codes.

Buckling of ferritic stainless steel members under combined axial compression and bending

An experimental and numerical study of ferritic stainless steel tubular cross sections under combined loading is presented in this paper. Two square hollow section (SHS) sizes—SHS 40×40×2 and SHS 50×50×2 made of Grade EN 1.4509 (AISI 441) stainless steel—were considered in the experimental program, which included 2 concentrically loaded stub column tests, 2 four-point bending tests, and 14 eccentrically loaded stub column tests. In parallel with the experimental investigation, a finite-element (FE) study was also conducted. Following validation of the FE models against the test results, parametric analyses were carried out to generate further structural performance data. The experimental and numerical results were analyzed and compared with the design strengths predicted by the current European stainless steel design code EN 1993-1-4 and American stainless steel design specification SEI/ASCE-8. Experimental and Numerical Studies of Ferritic Stainless Steel Tubular Cross Sections under Combined Compression and Bending

Fatigue is a dominant failure mechanism of several engineering components. One technique for increasing the fatigue life is by inducing surface residual stress to inhibit crack initiation. In this review, a microstructural study under various bulk (such as severe plastic deformation) and surface mechanical treatments is detailed. The effect of individual microstructural feature, residual stress, and strain hardening on mechanical properties and fatigue crack mechanisms are discussed in detail with a focus on nickel-based superalloys. Attention is given to the gradient microstructure and interface boundary behavior for the mechanical performance. It is recommended that hybrid processes, such as shot peening (SP) followed by deep cold rolling (DCR), could enhance fatigue life. The technical and scientific understanding of microstructural features delineated here could be useful for developing materials for fatigue performance.

Experimental Study of Square and Rectangular CFDST Sections with Stainless Steel Outer Tubes under Axial Compression

Ferritic stainless steels are low cost, price-stable, corrosion-resistant materials. Although widely used in the automotive and domestic appliance sectors, structural applications are scarce owing to a dearth of performance data and design guidance. The characteristics of ferritics make them appropriate for structures requiring strong and moderately durable structural elements with attractive metallic surface finishes. The present paper provides an overview of the structural behaviour of ferritic stainless steels, including a summary of the findings of a recent European project (SAFSS) on ferritics. Laboratory experiments have been completed including material tests as well as structural member tests, both at ambient and elevated temperatures. The experimental data is supplemented by numerical analysis in order to study a wide range of parameters. The findings of this work have enabled design guidance to be proposed, as discussed herein.
