Comparative lipid peroxidation, antioxidant defense systems and proline content in roots of two rice cultivars differing in salt tolerance

Without roots there would be no rhizosphere and no rhizodeposition to fuel microbial activity. Although micro-organisms may view roots merely as a source of carbon supply this belies the fascinating complexity and diversity of root systems that occurs despite their common function. Here, we examine the physiological and genetic determinants of root growth and the complex, yet varied and flexible, root architecture that results. The main functions of root systems are also explored including how roots cope with nutrient acquisition from the heterogeneous soil environment and their ability to form mutualistic associations with key soil micro-organisms (such as nitrogen fixing bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi) to aid them in their quest for nutrients. Finally, some key biotic and abiotic constraints on root development and function in the soil environment are examined and some of the adaptations roots have evolved to counter such stresses discussed.

Plant root growth, architecture and function

Salinity in agricultutal terms is the excess of salts above the level plant require. Most often it poses constrains in the growth hence productivity of the category of plants called glycophytes, wherein falls major crops, therefore is a serious concern. It is often recognized as excess of sodium ions (sodicity) that imparts life threatening consequences in plant due to mal-textured soil hindered porosity and aeration leads to physiological water deficit. Mingling with other edaphic/environmental factors viz. precipitation, temperature, flooding, soil profile, water table exaggerates the catastrophe synergistically. Improper irrigations system, leaching fraction added with land clearing and deforestation have been marked as the major cause. The present review underlines the different sources of salinity stress and their physiological manifestations, toxicity responses alongwith tolerance in plants and management strategies in affected landscapes.

Understanding the properties of fat, oil, and grease and their removal using grease interceptors.

The ginger family (Zingiberaceae), one of the most versatile medicinal plants, is also a popular flavoring component in a variety of foods and drinks. The objective of the current study is to examine the phytochemistry and evaluate the biological effects of methanolic extracts from a unique ginger family plant ( Zingiber salarkhanii Rahman et Yusuf). The analgesic (acetic acid-induced writhing method), CNS anxiolytic (Hole-cross method), cytotoxic (brine shrimp lethality method), and antioxidant (DPPH scavenging method) effects of the plant extract were studied. Then the data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA followed by Dunnett’s test using SPSS (version 20). The result obtained assures that Z. salarkhanii root extract has a variety of active compounds and showed significant analgesic (58%) and CNS anxiolytic activity (22.7 ± 2.22), as well as this plant, exhibited strong cytotoxic (LC 50 = 0.784 µg/ml) and free radical scavenging activity (IC 50 = 1.322 µg/ml).
