An Optimal Autonomous Decentralized Control Method for Voltage Control Devices by Using a Multi-Agent System

In the Dutch power system the power consumption is increasing while the transmission and distribution system capacity is not increasing at the same rate. Furthermore due to the increasing amount of decentralized generation, by for example micro-CHP units and wind turbines, the power flows in the power system are changing. In weak sub-transmission and distribution grids an increase in the number of voltage stability problems is expected. However: with the large share of decentralized generation we have the solution for voltage problems already there. In this paper we propose a new Hierarchical Agent Based Instability Protection System. In this paper the idea is described and a theoretical justification is given, in a later stage of the project we will verify the system with the Real-time Digital Simulator and external controls.

An optimal decentralized control for voltage control devices by means of a multi-agent system

Due to the penetration of Distributed Generation (DG), distribution systems are advancing towards the smart grid technologies for voltage control strategies. In this paper, a Multi-Agent System (MAS) Based, two stage algorithm is proposed that removes the inadmissible voltages on the nodes of distribution system, in distributed manner. Furthermore, the algorithm also minimizes the overall losses. The proposed scheme utilizes minimum data in the voltage control strategies. The effectiveness of the proposed method is investigated by conducting simulations in Matlab software, on a typical Finnish residential medium voltage distribution system with varying DG penetration. Results indicate validity of the approach in distributed voltage control and give the sensitivity analysis based on DG penetration for both stages.

Multi-agent system based distributed voltage control in medium voltage distribution systems

This paper proposes a new voltage control scheme for distribution networks, where various new components, such as distributed resources, are being equipped, while conventional types of tap-changing controllers are still active. The authors employ a multi-agent system to build the new control scheme for the tap-changing controllers that is suitable for an autonomous system. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is demonstrated through several numerical simulations with successful results.
