Effect of heat treatment on the bending behavior of tri-layered Cu/Al/Cu composite plates

Microstructure and mechanical properties of AISI 347 stainless steel/A335 low alloy steel dissimilar joint produced by gas tungsten arc welding

The mechanical properties and fracture characteristics of stainless steel clad plates by vacuum hot rolling at different rolling temperature of 1100 °C (S1), 1200 °C (S2) and 1300 °C (S3) are investigated in detail. The carburized layer thickness and grain size is gradually increased with the increasing rolling temperature. The sufficient alloy element diffusion, recovery and recrystallization at the bonding temperature of 1300 °C lead to the highest interfacial shear strength and the lowest longitudinal tensile strength among the three clad plates. However, the tensile ductility is increased with the increasing rolling temperature, which is attributed to the increased interfacial bonding strength. The strong interface can effectively delay the formation of interfacial delamination crack and premature localized necking, resulting into a prolong uniform plastic deformation stage with a low stress triaxiality. In addition, there are many intergranular tunnel cracks with the length of 50–150 µm presented in the carburized layer due to Cr 23 C 6 carbides on the grain boundary, which can effectively toughen the stainless steel clad plates.

The tensile behaviors and fracture characteristics of stainless steel clad plates with different interfacial status

The aim of this contribution was to study the performance of cladded low-carbon steel (ASTM A283 Grade C) to austenitic stainless steel (ASTM A240 type 316/AISI 316) using hot-roll bonding. The mechanical and metallurgical properties of the cladded steel have been investigated before and after welding. Three weld samples with different configurations are prepared from cladded materials and, then, these joined metals were studied. Results on the microstructure, microhardness and mechanical strength were reported. Experimental studies showed that austenitic stainless steel AISI 316 (clad layer) could be cladded to low-carbon steel A283 (parent metal) with a good quality of bonding by hot-roll bonding. The bond interface of the cladded metals indicated that there is an intermediate zone between the clad layer and parent metal with heterogeneous microstructures due to the carbon diffusion. It was also found that microhardness measured from the clad layer to the parent metal showed an abrupt change adjacent to the interface due to a coarse grained soft ferritic band near the interface with larger microhardness than the adjacent metals. Tensile results revealed that the bonding was acceptable in all weld samples. It was also observed in bending tests that interfaces of bonded samples were safely carried out for some welding configurations. Toughness strength of the cladded metals at a given test temperature was found significantly higher than that of parent plate alone because of the high impact toughness of austenitic stainless steel layer. Consequently, mechanical properties of the low-carbon steel can be improved by hot-roll bonding with austenitic stainless steel.

The present work aims at studying structure–property correlations in an explosively clad HSLA steel with austenitic stainless steel of AISI 304L grade. The clad plate was subjected to hot rolling followed by a quenching and tempering treatment to achieve better mechanical properties in the base plate. Optical microscopy studies revealed that the interface between the two steels was wavy in the as clad plate and the waviness decreased substantially due to hot rolling. Subsequent heat treatment has not shown any significant effect either. The base plate had tempered martensite/bainite structure in as clad or heat treated conditions and ferrite-pearlite-bainite structure in hot rolled condition. The grains were finer and elongated near the interface. The stainless steel exhibited equiaxed grain structure in as clad, hot rolled or heat treated plates. Influence of hot rolling and heat treatment on structure and properties of HSLA steel explosively clad with austenitic stainless steel

The present work pertains to the study of microstructure and mechanical properties of explosively clad high strength low alloy steel with commercially pure titanium. The clad interface was characterized by metallography, hardness, shear bond strength and bend tests. The present study revealed that the clad interface was wavy in nature. Shear bond strength of clad interface was in between substrate and clad material. The three point bend tests were conducted on clad joint in such a way that cladding layer was subjected to tension and compression which have not shown any cracks at the interface. The mechanism and reasons for the observed behaviour have been discussed correlating microstructure, mechanical properties, fracture features and diffusion across the interface.
