This study aims to provide an overview of the latest research studies on the use of biopolymers in various textile processes, from spinning processes to dyeing and finishing treatment, proposed as a possible solution to reduce the environmental impact of the textile industry. Recently, awareness of various polluting aspects of textile production, based on petroleum derivatives, has grown significantly. Environmental issues resulting from greenhouse gas emissions, and waste accumulation in nature and landfills, have pushed research activities toward more sustainable, low-impact alternatives. Polymers derived from renewable resources and/or with biodegradable characteristics were investigated as follows: (i) as constituent materials in yarn production, in view of their superior ability to be decomposed compared with common synthetic petroleum-derived plastics, positive antibacterial activities, good breathability, and mechanical properties; (ii) in textile finishing to act as biological catalysts; (iii) to impart specific functional properties to treated textiles; (iv) in 3D printing technologies on fabric surfaces to replace traditionally more pollutive dye-based and inkjet printing; and (v) in the implants for the treatment of dye-contaminated water. Finally, current projects led by well-known companies on the development of new materials for the textile market are presented.

Towards the Sustainability of the Plastic Industry through Biopolymers: Properties and Potential Applications to the Textiles World

Non-flammability is an important property of nanoclays. Flammability of synthetic polymers hinders their applications in technical fields. Introduction of nanoclays in polymers has found to reduce the flammability of matrices. Owing to cost-effectiveness, easy availability, environment-friendliness nature, and improved physical properties, nanoclays have replaced the conventional halogen containing flame retardants. These nanocomposites have been synthesized using melt blending, in situ polymerization, and solvent methods. In this regard, nanoclay modification routes have also been adopted to compatiblize the organophilic nature of polymers and enhance the mechanical, thermal, barrier, and flame retardancy properties of nanoclay-based materials. Mechanism of non-flammability properties of nanoclay-based composites relies on the formation of carbonaceous layer shielding the underneath material during combustion. The non-flammable polymer/nanoclay are promising for recent advance aerospace, automobile, electronics, barrier, construction, and environmental applications. In technical fields, there are still numerous stones left unturned to attain high-performance non-flammable nanocomposites.

Removal of Basic Violet from Wool Dyeing Effluent Using Nanoparticles

ABSTRACT This work reports the effect of alkali, enzyme, and their sequential combination treatment on rice straw fiber properties (fiber diameter, aspect ratio, fiber length, bundle strength and elongation). The change in fiber properties and its association with rice straw fibers reinforced epoxy biocomposites has been studied. Biocomposites, prepared using the hand lay-up technique, were characterized using FTIR, TGA and SEM. The mechanical properties viz. tensile, flexural, impact and compression were measured according to the ASTM standards. Sound transmission loss and noise reduction coefficient of the composites was also determined. Results showed that the alkali and enzyme treatment to the rice straw significantly reduced fiber length and fiber diameter by 50%. Enzyme treatment caused the highest reduction in fiber diameter which increased the aspect ratio. The sequential combination of alkali and enzyme yielded significant improvements in the tensile (20%), flexural (22%), impact (98%), and compression (328%) strength of the composites. The noise reduction coefficient (0.95) of all rice straw composites was found excellent. Thus, alkali-enzyme pretreated rice straw fiber composite product is a good choice for agro-residue valorization and industrial product development.
