Identification and quantification of phenolic compounds in berry skin, pulp, and seeds in 13 grapevine varieties grown in Serbia.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to develop a new failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) framework for evaluation, prioritization and improvement of failure modes. Design/methodology/approach – A hybrid multiple criteria decision-making method combining VIKOR, decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) and analytic hierarchy process (AHP) is used to rank the risk of the failure modes identified in FMEA. The modified VIKOR method is employed to determine the effects of failure modes on together. Then the DEMATEL technique is used to construct the influential relation map among the failure modes and causes of failures. Finally, the AHP approach based on the DEMATEL is utilized to obtain the influential weights and give the prioritization levels for the failure modes. Findings – A case study of diesel engine’s turbocharger system is provided to illustrate the potential application and benefits of the proposed FMEA approach. Improving risk evaluation in FMEA with a hybrid multiple criteria decision making method

Downy mildew (DM) is one of the most destructive diseases affecting viticulture, especially in temperate-humid climates. This pathogen is able to differentially attack leaves and grapes, and is currently controlled with repeated applications of fungicides that lead to environmental pollution, development of resistant strains, residual toxicity, and pathogen pressure. The use of resistant grapevine varieties, obtained through breeding programs, represents a potential alternative to control grapevine DM, although this approach is constrained by the limits of natural resistance. In this review, we describe the latest breakthroughs achieved in the exploitation of the host–pathogen interaction, which have led to the identification of DM resistance loci, with associated molecular markers, that can be employed to efficiently screen hybrid grapevines and improve (pre-)breeding programs. The development of controlled infection protocols and contemporary “omics” approaches (next generation sequencing/genomics, QTLomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics) integrated with comparative studies are shedding light onto the early host responses to DM attack and the complex plant defence mechanisms that are triggered.

Breeding for grapevine downy mildew resistance: a review of “omics” approaches

Bunch compactness (or density) is a grapevine specific trait that affects the commercial quality and sanitary status of wine and tablegrapes. Compact bunches are more susceptible to diverse pests and diseases such as Botrytis bunch rot and their berries ripen more heterogeneously, causing important economic losses through a reduction in crop yield and grape and wine quality. Bunch compactness is determined by the fraction of the morphological volume of the bunch that is filled by berries, but this simple definition contrasts sharply with the difficulty to measure it. While there are several objective and quantitative methods available to measure bunch compactness, the lack of a consistent approach between researchers makes comparing measurements difficult. The complexity of bunch compactness initially arises from the several bunch and berry traits that influence it, and from the distinct effects that these traits may cause in different cultivars. In addition to this genetic effect, diverse environmental signals impact on bunch compactness by affecting those primary factors that contribute to the solid component of the bunch (berry number, berry size) or to its spatial arrangement (rachis architecture). Last, several viticultural approaches, including agronomic techniques and growth regulators, have also proven to affect bunch compactness in different ways. This review aims to discuss present knowledge about this relevant grapevine trait.

What do we know about grapevine bunch compactness? A state‐of‐the‐art review

Group multi-criteria decision making (GMCDM) approach for selecting the most suitable table grape variety intended for organic viticulture

A collection of 196 grapevine samples from five countries of the Western Balkan region, representing local and traditional cultivars, was genotyped with 22 SSR markers. Identity analysis revealed 125 unique genotypes, which were further used for diversity assessment. The average number of alleles per locus detected was 11 ± 3.53, ranging from 6 to 21. The low cumulative probability of identical genotypes (2.96 × 10−20) shown in this study implies an even distribution of alleles within the analyzed set of grapevines and a sufficient number of loci. On the basis of the discriminatory power of each SSR, a set of five markers (VVMD5, VVMD7, VVMD28, VChr3a, and VChr8b) was determined as sufficient for high-throughput discrimination of the target cultivars. The maximum discriminating power was evidenced for loci VVMD28 and Vchr8b (0.96, 0.94, respectively). A core collection covering the entire genetic diversity resulted in a set of 60 genotypes representing approximately 50 % of the samples from each country. Structure clustering of Balkan and West European cultivars resulted in four well distinct groups identified according to the classification of Negrul (1946). The lowest level of admixed genotypes was assigned for grapevines from Bosnia and Herzegovina (61 %) and the highest for Serbian (87 %) grapevines. In terms of grape use, the wine cultivars were divided into three groups and the fourth group was intermixed, with half wine and half table grapes. The highest Nei’s genetic distance (0.22) was discovered between Slovenian and Macedonian cultivars, while the lowest (0.09) was between Slovenian and Serbian cultivars. Macedonian cultivars were genetically most distant from the others (0.17). A similar pattern of differentiation among populations is seen with distance-based clustering. Analysis of molecular variance revealed only 1 % of genetic variation among groups of different origin, while the variation among individuals within geographical groups and within individuals explained 13 and 86 % of the total variation, respectively.

Microsatellite inferred genetic diversity and structure of Western Balkan grapevines (Vitis vinifera L.)

Reference genetic profiles were generated for 12 traditional grapevine cultivars of Serbia through a genotyping approach that included the "core set" of 9 SSR markers for genetic identification and further 13 common microsatellites for strengthening genetic relationship analysis. Consistent matching with SSR markers of grapevines cultivated in neighbouring countries or maintained in European germplasm collections was found for most of the genotypes, suggesting possible synonyms and revealing that 'Muskat Krokan' corresponds to 'Muscat fleur d’Oranger' and two 'Tamjanika' cultivars are identical to 'Moscato Giallo' and 'Moscato Rosa'. When compared with germplasm representing the classical eco-geographic grouping of grapevine cultivars, Serbian non-Muscat genotypes clustered within the Convar pontica subconvar balcanica taxon thus supporting their indigenous origin.

Genetic characterization and relationships of traditional grape cultivars from Serbia

Aim: Leaf removal around clusters and cluster thinning are techniques usually applied in cool-climate vineyards in order to achieve optimal grape maturity. However, the impact of the timing of these two operations differs across varieties. Thus, the aim of the present work was to investigate the effects of cluster thinning and leaf removal timing (performed at three specific time points) on grape quality and monomeric anthocyanins in the wines of Cabernet-Sauvignon and Probus (Kadarka × Cabernet-Sauvignon, Vitis vinifera L.) 
Methods and results: The experiment was conducted in Sremski Karlovci (Northern Serbia) in 2014, 2015, and 2016. Leaf removal was applied on six basal nodes of each shoot at three time points, 7 days after flowering, 30 days after flowering, and at veraison, i.e., at the onset of berry ripening. After cluster thinning, which was performed 7 days after flowering, one cluster per shoot was retained. On the treated vines, leaf removal treatment and cluster thinning were applied only once. Leaf removal was more effective than cluster thinning in respect to grape quality. Leaf removal, applied 7 and 30 days after flowering, decreased titratable acidity in Cabernet-Sauvignon, while in Probus an interaction of leaf removal and year was observed. Moreover, early leaf removal decreased the incidence of Botrytis sp. in Probus. The varieties reacted differently to cluster thinning in respect to grape quality: cluster thinning increased total soluble solids in Probus and lowered titratable acidity in Cabernet-Sauvignon. In 2015, both cluster thinning and leaf removal yielded changes in the anthocyanin ratios in the wines. Cluster thinning increased total and acylated anthocyanins in the wine of Cabernet-Sauvignon compared to wine derived from unthinned vines. The peonidin content was 40 % higher in the Cabernet-Sauvignon wine if the vines were subjected to leaf removal treatments. 
Conclusions: Cluster thinning and leaf removal affected both Cabernet-Sauvignon and Probus (Vitis vinifera L.) grape quality and wine composition. Early leaf removal was the most effective treatment in both varieties. Therefore, combined application of cluster thinning and early leaf removal is highly recommended in the production of high-quality red wines in Serbia. 
Significance and impact of the study: Timing of leaf removal application was usually investigated around flowering and veraison. Our results suggested that leaf removal between these two phenological stages also improves grape quality and changes the ratio of the monomeric anthocyanins in the wine.
