Laser spectroscopy for nuclear structure physics

Progress in the ability to accumulate and cool positrons and antiprotons is enabling new scientific and technological opportunities. The driver for this work is plasma physics research—developing new ways to create and manipulate antimatter plasmas. An overview is presented of recent results and near-term goals and challenges. In atomic physics, new experiments on the resonant capture of positrons by molecules provide the first direct evidence that positrons bind to “ordinary” matter (i.e., atoms and molecules). The formation of low-energy antihydrogen was observed recently by injecting low-energy antiprotons into a cold positron plasma. This opens up a range of new scientific opportunities, including precision tests of fundamental symmetries such as invariance under charge conjugation, parity, and time reversal, and study of the chemistry of matter and antimatter. Emerging science and technology of antimatter plasmas and trap-based beams

In the last decade there has been a renaissance in laser spectroscopy at on-line facilities. This has included the introduction of ion traps and the use of laser ion sources to study the hyperfine structure of exotic nuclei far from stability and produce selective enhancement of isomeric beams. In-source spectroscopy has allowed the study of rare isotopes with yields as low as 0.1 atoms per second. In the case of high-resolution spectroscopy, cooling and trapping the ions has dramatically improved the sensitivity. Some elements that were previously inaccessible to laser spectroscopy are now available for study through the technique of in-trap optical pumping. This paper reviews the field of laser spectroscopy at on-line facilities, with an emphasis on new techniques. A summary of experimental data is presented.

Progress in laser spectroscopy at radioactive ion beam facilities

Multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometry

The projectile fragment separator provides a wide variety of short-lived RI-ions with less restrictions on their chemical property or lifetime limit. The beam energy and quality is, however, not adequate for low-energy beam experiments, in particular for trapping experiments. Recently, one has proposed to obtain a low-energy beam from an energetic RI-beam leaving a projectile fragment separator by using a large gas-catcher and an rf ion-guide system. In off-line and in on-line test experiments, the principle of the rf ion-guide was proven. An overall efficiency of 0.2% for 70 MeV/u 8 Li from the RIKEN projectile fragment separator (RIPS) was obtained so far.
