The expectation of sustainable development of energy and environment has widely attracted public׳s attention, and the high-efficiency heat transfer device is greatly needed. As a new heat transfer device, pulsating heat pipe (PHP) has been considered have a bright prospect due to its obvious advantages – simple structure, low cost and excellent heat transfer capability. A number of experimental and theoretical researches have been conducted on PHP in the past decades since it was proposed by Akachi in 1990. However, due to the hydrodynamic and thermodynamic coupling effect, the operational mechanism of PHP is extremely complex and has not been completely revealed so far. With great expectation of applications for the PHP in the near future, this paper attempts to review the development of PHP on the basis of systematic summary of the latest results of both experimental and theoretical studies. Meanwhile, some promising and innovatory applications of the PHP are also reported. This paper is expected to provide basic reference for future researches.

Review of the development of pulsating heat pipe for heat dissipation

Numerical simulation of PV cooling by using single turn pulsating heat pipe

Pulsating Heat Pipes (PHPs) are cooling devices that are compact in size and have an ability to transfer heat in low temperature differences. Working fluids strongly affect the thermal performance of PHPs. In this paper, effects of some thermophysical parameters relating to working fluids, such as boiling point, latent heat of vaporization, surface tension, thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity, are presented based on experimental and numerical studies done in recent years. Addition of nanoparticles to fluids, or making nanofuild, is a new method of improving thermophysical properties of fluids. Recently, many studies are carried out on thermophysical properties of nano-fuild. Results indicate that using nanofuild could improve thermal performance of heat pips. Finally, in this review, flow regimes of some working fluids are represented under different conditions to obtain a better insight into the effect of input heat on working fluid flow pattern. It is concluded that lower dynamic viscosity and surface tension and higher thermal conductivity improve thermal performance of PHP. For lower heat inputs, lower boiling point of working fluid is more favorable due to faster start-up onset; however, at higher heat loads it causes some problems, such as dry-out.

How to improve the thermal performance of pulsating heat pipes: A review on working fluid

Thermal performance of pulsating heat pipes (PHPs) is dependent to several factors. Inner and outer diameter of tube, filling ratio, thermal conductivity, heat input, inclination angle, and length of each section are the most influential factors in the design process of PHPs. Since water is a conventional working fluid for PHPs, thermal resistance and effective thermal conductivity of PHPs filled with water are modeled by applying a GMDH (group method of data handling) neural network. The input data of the GMDH model are collected from other experimental investigations to predict the physical properties including thermal resistance and effective thermal conductivity of PHPs filled with water as working fluid. The accuracy of the introduced models are examined through the R2 tests and resulted in 0.9779 and 0.9906 for thermal resistance and effective thermal conductivity, respectively.
