Journal Article

Plant extracts as potential mosquito larvicides

TL;DR: The current state of knowledge on phytochemical sources and mosquitocidal activity, their mechanism of action on target population, variation of their larvicidal activity according to mosquito species, instar specificity, polarity of solvents used during extraction, nature of active ingredient and promising advances made in biological control of mosquitoes by plant derived secondary metabolites have been reviewed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mosquito larvicidal activities of Solanum villosum berry extract against the dengue vector Stegomyia aegypti.

TL;DR: S. villosum offers promise as potential bio control agent against S. aegypti particularly in its markedly larvicidal effect and could be used in stagnant water bodies for the control of mosquitoes acting as vector for many communicable diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mosquito larvicidal and antimicrobial activity of protein of Solanum villosum leaves

TL;DR: Proteins isolated from mature leaves of S. villosum were found to have larvicidal and antimicrobial properties and provide considerable scope in exploiting local indigenous resources for isolation of antimicrobial and mosquito larv suicidal proteins.
Journal ArticleDOI

Laboratory evaluation of a phytosteroid compound of mature leaves of Day Jasmine (Solanaceae: Solanales) against larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) and nontarget organisms

TL;DR: Qualitative and chromatographic analysis of the crude extract of C. diurnum revealed the presence of many bioactive phytochemicals, and the bioassay experiment with the third-instar larval form established that the presenceof a steroid compound was responsible for mosquitocidal activity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Larvicidal activity of Solanum villosum Mill (Solanaceae: Solanales) leaves to Anopheles subpictus Grassi (Diptera: Culicidae) with effect on non-target Chironomus circumdatus Kieffer (Diptera: Chironomidae)

TL;DR: Qualitative and chromatographic analysis of the solvent extract revealed the presence of carbohydrates, saponins, terpenoids, volatile oil, steroids, phenols and flavonoids as major bioactive phytochemicals.
