Most grapes are from cultivars of Vitis vinifera which may contain the phytoalexin resveratrol. Molluscidal and insecticidal activities have been found in grape seed oil. Linoleic acid is the major fatty acid in grape seed oil followed by oleic acid and palmitic acid. There is a greater abundance of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated than saturated fatty acids, 1-butyl-3-methylacetate, trans-2-hexenal, E−2-pentenal, hexanal, and heptanal which may account for the fruity flavor. Several volatiles were identified in the oil such as ethyl octanoate, ethylacetate, ethanol, acetic acid, ethyl hexanoate, and 3-methylbutanol. Tocopherols and α and γ isomers of the tocotrienols are also present in the oil. Trilinolein is the most abundant triglyceride, followed by dilinoleoyl-oleoylglycerol, and dilinoleoyl-palmitoylglycerol.

Objective Four plant extracts possessing molluscicidal and insecticidal efficacy were evaluated under laboratory conditions versus Biomphalaria alexandrina, Lymnea cailliaudi snails, their egg masses and Culex pipiens larvae. These extracts included Grape seed, Eucalyptus, Pomegranate, Verbesina alcoholic extracts, as well as Eucalyptus oil. Methods Different mortalities in the exposed vectors were recorded due to the four plant extracts using different concentrations and exposure time. Results Total snail mortality LC 100 was (100 ppm/12-24h) for Grape seed, (200 ppm/18-24h) for Eucalyptus, (100 ppm/12-18h) for Pomegranate, (100-200 ppm/24h) for Verbesina alcoholic extracts and (100-200 ppm/12h) for Eucalyptus oil. However, only Eucalyptus, Verbesina alcoholic extracts and Eucalyptus oil revealed snail ovicidal effects. LC 100 was (100-200 ppm/24h), (100-200 ppm/24h) & (100-200 ppm/12-48h) respectively. Moreover, the same plant extracts were able to induce total Culex pipiens larvicidal mortality, LC 100 was (200 ppm/48h). However, Grape seed and Pomegranate alcoholic extracts did not induce either snail ovicidal or Culex pipiens larvicidal total mortalities. Activities of the studied plant extracts were considered using reference molluscicidal (Copper sulfate) and insecticidal (Temephos) substances. Conclusion Egyptian native plants continue to provide a wealth of potential sources for biologically active agents that may have a promising role in the production of safe, biodegradable eco-friendly and natural molluscicidal and insecticidal agents.

Laboratory Evaluation of the Effect of Egyptian Native Plants Against Some Parasitic Vectors Misir'daki Yerli Bitkilerin Bazi Parazitik Vektörlere Karşi Olan Etkisinin Laboratuvarda Değerlendirilmesi

Back to nature" is an increased demand nowadays, for using plants in therapy "instead of using synthetic drugs that may have adverse effects. Grape seed extract (Proanthcyanidins) and Selenium possesses a wide array of pharmacological and biochemical actions. Hymenolepiasis and Passulurus infections are considered as common health problems worldwide. In the present study, Grape seed extract and Selenium were evaluated singly or in combination with Anthelmintics (Niclosamide or Mebendazole) in treatment of Hymenolepis nana, Hymenolepis diminuta and Passulurus ambiguous infections in 160 naturally infected mice. Treatment of H. nana & H. diminuta infected mice with Niclosamide (half therapeutic dose) gave an efficacy of 47% while on addition of Grape seed extract and Selenium the efficacy of the drug increased to 64%, 57% respectively (P ≤ 0.05). In case of Passulurus ambiguous infected group Mebendazole (half therapeutic dose) gave an efficacy of 50% (P ≤ 0.05). With addition of Grape seed extract and Selenium the efficacy of the drug was 55.3% for both. Complete disappearance of eggs in feces was obtained using full therapeutic dose of the specific drug alone while treatment using antioxidants alone revealed an efficacy ranging from (12.4-24.7%) in the two infected groups without significance (P ≤ 0.05). It is concluded that the use of medicinal plants hold hope of finding new Anthelmintics treatment as part of an integrated approach specifically designed to achieve sustainable parasite control.
