Tourism depends to a large extent on air travel and transport. The reliability and dependability of carriers to perform consistently is therefore of critical importance to the travel and tourism industry. The unscheduled termination of airline services caused by challenges in the macro environment has proven to be extremely disruptive to business travellers and holiday-makers alike. Operating airlines in southern Africa has proved to be fraught with challenges in the macro environment resulting in several airlines terminating their services after short periods of operation. This article focuses on the impacts of the macro environment on airline operations in the region. From this study, it is clear that social and technological factors create opportunities for airlines in southern Africa, but that their ability to survive financially are seriously threatened by political and economic factors. Government bailouts to state carriers has skewed commercial operations resulting in an un-level playing field with private airlines.

Impacts of the macro environment on airline operations in Southern Africa

By reviewing bibliography sources addressing airspace design and system performances, it’s evident that airspace fragmentation decreases the efficiency of European Air Traffic Management (ATM) system. Although it’s often mentioned, a minor progress has been made to describe this issue more in-depth. Therefore, this research was carried out with the purpose to determine typology of European airspace fragmentation and to identify topic issues that need to be addressed in further research. The research is focused on literature review and analysis of European airspace design. As result of conducted analysis, five airspace fragmentation types have been defined and described. Accordingly, spatial distribution and temporal consistency of airspace fragmentation types were depicted as well as their similarities and differences. In addition, this research identifies airspace fragmentation type requiring additional study. Lastly, this research paper aims to contribute to better understanding of ATM system arrangement and simplify strategic planning at national and regional level in terms of capacity, cost-efficiency, environment and safety as four pillars of future development of European ATM system.

Critical success factors for airlines in Southern Africa

AbstractEvery day, the surface of the Earth is observed and monitored by hundreds of artificial satellites operating in orbit at different altitudes and collecting very large quantities of heterogeneous data. The analysis and multi-purpose use of these data are among the great challanges in an increasingly digital society. Satellites can affect safety, security, cybersecurity and sustainable development of transport. The application of United Nations Outer Space Treaties is necessary to resolve issues of legal responsibility in that regard. 

Big Data and Satellites: Between Safety of Airspace and Criminal Liability

Each year the demand of aviation services is increasing but the European airspace is still fragmented according to national borders. Delays of implementing Single European Sky are increasingly high. Consequently, each year the aviation industry loses a lot of money, among others, because of flight route extensions or higher fuel consumption. A comparison between Air Traffic Management-Related Operational Performance U.S./Europe shows how inefficient ATM is in Europe and how costly for the airspace users. This study also describes the benefits and costs of the SES full implementation.
