Chemical characterization and biological effects of Sicilian Opuntia ficus indica (L.) mill. Fruit juice: antioxidant and antiulcerogenic activity.

TL;DR: The juice of whole fruits of Sicilian cultivars of prickly pear was investigated, and the contents of ascorbic acid, total polyphenols, and flavonoids were determined and showed antioxidant activity in the DPPH(*) test.
Journal ArticleDOI

Biological effect of Opuntia ficus indica (L.) Mill. (Cactaceae) waste matter. Note I: diuretic activity.

TL;DR: Results show that O. ficus indica cladode, fruit and flower infusions significantly increase diuresis and this effect is more marked with the fruit infusion and it is particularly significant during the chronic treatment.
Journal ArticleDOI

Anti-inflammatory activity of extract and fractions from Nepeta sibthorpii Bentham.

TL;DR: The results of phytochemical studies on aerial parts of Nepeta sibthorpii Bentham (Lamiaceae), an endemic plant of Greece, show a significant inhibition of paw oedema in rat and suppose that the anti-inflammatory effect of methanol extract could be related to the free radical scavenging activity and that it depends on a synergic action of all the components of the methanolate extract.
Journal ArticleDOI

Opuntia ficus indica (L.) Mill. fruit juice protects liver from carbon tetrachloride-induced injury.

TL;DR: Data show that O. ficus indica fruit juice administration exerts protective and curative effects against the CCl4‐induced degenerative process in rat liver, and this data are in agreement with the functional improvement of hepatocytes.
