Retail shelf space planning problems: A comprehensive review and classification framework

Today’s complex supply chains are increasingly susceptible to the turbulent and fast-changing business environment and their economic implications. Resilience as an effective strategic planning during disturbances is a way to mitigate supply chain vulnerabilities. After reviewing the literature on the topic of a resilient supply chain, this paper extracts a complete series of 16 resilience enablers. These identified enablers form the foundation of a questionnaire distributed among over 150 experts and staffs of a real case associated with an Iranian automotive supply chain. The reliability and validity of the questionnaire are evaluated by statistical tests and Cronbach’s alpha. Then, a hybrid of the Z-number data envelopment analysis and neural network is employed for the efficiency score calculation, separately. Finally, the associated results are combined and the final efficiency scores are obtained. The case study findings indicate that by improving the resilience enablers, especially ones with the greatest influence on the supply chain performance, firms can be less vulnerable in times of supply chain disruptions. The framework proposed in this study may find a broad practical application in all types of supply chains.

A hybrid Z-number data envelopment analysis and neural network for assessment of supply chain resilience: a case study

The more customer demand is impulse-driven, the more it is space-dependent and the more it is subject to variation. We investigate the corresponding problem of retail shelf-space planning when demand is stochastic and sensitive to the number and position of facings. We develop a model to maximize a retailer’s profit by selecting the number of facings and their shelf position under the assumption of limited space. The model is particularly applicable to promotional or temporary products. We develop the first optimization model and solution approach that takes stochastic demand into account, since the current literature applies deterministic models for shelf-space planning. By the means of an innovative modeling approach for the case with space- and positioning effects and the conversion of our problem into a mixed-integer problem, we obtain optimal results within very short run times for large-scale instances relevant in practice. Furthermore, we develop a solution approach to account for cross-space elasticity, and solve it using an own heuristic, which efficiently yields near-optimal results. We demonstrate that correctly considering space elasticity and demand variation is essential. The corresponding impacts on profits and solution structures become even more significant when space elasticity and stochastic demand interact, resulting in up to 5% higher profits and up to 80% differences in solution structures, if both effects are correctly accounted for. We develop an efficient modeling approach, compare the model results with approaches applied in practice and derive rules-of-thumb for planners.

A Shelf-Space Optimization Model When Demand is Stochastic and Space-Elastic

In this paper, a shelf retail decision making model is proposed and examined the effect of different factors such as vertical and horizontal location, product cross elasticity, the number of items in eye-level, etc. The success of a retailer depends on his/her ability to adapt environmental changes through continuous decision making about how much and which product, should be placed from which horizontal level of which shelf, and with what display orientation. In this paper, shelves are considered 3-dimensionally, and in addition to the length and width of the shelves, the depth of the shelves is also effective in decision making. The height of the shelves has been considered as a variable, and its optimal value would be obtained by solving the proposed mathematical model. Considering the third dimension of shelf makes it possible to use the back space of shelves for the purpose of holding the inventory. In this paper, two display orientations for the items are considered and each orientation can have a different effect on selling the product. Items can be stacked on the shelves, but the note is that it is not possible to stack some of the item. By considering the third dimension, the total inventory and inventory of each product in the store can be obtained. For solving the model, genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed and the Taguchi method is applied for tuning parameter of the GA.
