Victimization and Substance Abuse among Women: Contributing Factors, Interventions, and Implications:

We integrate the psychological literature on spillover effects in interpersonal perception, the sociological literature on stigma, and the organizational literature on gossip in social networks to develop a model explaining how coworkers evaluate organizational members who interact with stigmatized individuals. We present propositions predicting how coworker characteristics, relationship characteristics, and stigma characteristics influence the likelihood an initially nonstigmatized employee will be negatively evaluated following association with a stigmatized individual. Finally, we discuss implications of the model for organizations trying to foster relationships between organizational members and stigmatized individuals.

Known by the Company We Keep: Stigma-By-Association Effects in the Workplace

Married or cohabiting female drug-abusing patients (N = 75) were randomly assigned to either a behavioral couples therapy condition (BCT; n = 37), which consisted of group, individual, and behavioral couples therapy sessions, or to an equally intensive individual-based treatment condition (IBT; n = 38), which consisted of group and individual counseling. During most of the 1-year follow-up, compared with participants who received IBT, those who received BCT reported (a) fewer days of substance use, (b) longer periods of continuous abstinence, (c) lower levels of alcohol, drug, and family problems, and (d) higher relationship satisfaction. However, differences in relationship satisfaction and number of days of substance use dissipated over the course of the posttreatment follow-up period and were not significantly different by the end of 1 year.

Behavioral couples therapy for female substance-abusing patients: effects on substance use and relationship adjustment.

This article provides a review of various types of literature on gender differences among substance abusers. The authors begin this literature review by summarizing the literature on the differing treatment needs of men and women. The authors continue with a review of the empirically based literature on gender differences in background characteristics of substance users. They conclude with a review of treatment outcome studies. This review provides a context for identifying the gaps in the literature and identifies a research agenda that will help improve treatment services for women in both community-based and prison settings.

A Review of Gender Differences Among Substance Abusers

Despite evidence for the importance of significant others in the recovery process, little is known about male partners of female substance abusers. This paper presents a qualitative exploratory study conducted to learn more about male partners of crack/cocaine-addicted women and specifically examines the men's influence on the treatment and recovery process of their female partners. Subjects were found to have an extensive history of substance abuse and some experience with treatment; three-quarters were active crack/cocaine users. Although their attitude toward women's substance abuse was negative and their opinion of treatment for women positive, men's behavioral support for their partners was usually passive and inconsistent.
