PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make expandable the quadruple PPM and to make performable an infrared communication at a higher speed and with a small power consumption by making a single controller perform the general coding/encoding processing and light emission/reception control using two infrared modules. SOLUTION: The transmission data are sent to a controller 2 from a host 1 and stored in a transmission FIFO part. Then, the transmission data are sent to an encoding part from the transmission FIFO part to undergo parallel/ serial conversion there, encoded into an expanded PPM system and sent to the infrared modules 3 and 4. The transmission data are light-emitted from the modules 3 and 4. Thus, a transmitting side 10 performs the transmission processing by means of a pair of modules 3 and 4. In other words, the data are sent to an infrared module 5 from the module 3 and the data are sent to an infrared module 6 from the module 4 when the data are sent to a receiving side 20 from the transmitting side 10.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To support various communication protocols by combining many digital modems consisting of IR modem arrays connected in parallel with a synchronous/asynchronous communication controller, a UART and an exclusive support logic. SOLUTION: The multi-protocol communication controller is substantially a combination of a communication controller 10, a primary general-purpose synchronous transmitter-receiver UART-A, a secondary general-purpose synchronous transmitter-receiver UART-B, an exclusive support logic, and logs of digital modems. The standard UART-A is completely compatible with an IRDA standard specification. In the case of executing an application program that is programmed such that a host including a controller is in accordance with a correct infrared ray communication protocol, the UART-A is directly connected between a host bus and an asynchronous modem in the IR modem array, for example, between an IRDA modem and an ASK modem. However, the application program is described without specifying any proper communication protocol, the 2nd UART-B is addedly connected to the 1st UART-A.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an efficient system having a diversity of functions for infrared communication by providing a flush modulating means which selectively generates pulses having pulse widths narrower than a specific value in response to FM coded signals in the first and second halves of each bit cell period. SOLUTION: FM-coded data signals transmitted from a serial controller 36 are flush-modulated through a DFF circuit 31, a counter 30, and a J-KFF circuit 32 and a pulse having a length of about a 1/4 bit cell is transmitted to an IR source 37. The IR source 37 converts the coded signals into IR-ray pulse signals and transmits the pulses to the IR receiver of a decoder. The decoder sets a latch 23 upon detecting the rise of the IR pulse signals, samples the IF pulse signals through latches 22 an 24, and generates FM coded signals having about a 1/2 bit cell length and a serial controller 27 decodes the signals into an NRZ format.
