This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. Corn (Zea mays L.)–soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] is among the most typical crop rotations in the U.S. Corn Belt, and N is the most limiting nutrient for both crops. This study aims to assess the effects of N management for corn on the following soybean crop. Two corn–soybean rotation N fertilizer rate studies—a long-term study (1983–2020, Case Study I) and a two-season study (2019–2020, Case Study II)—were conducted in Kansas (United States). Case Study I focused on soybean seed yield as the response variable, whereas Case Study II included a detailed seasonal characterization of soil N, symbiotic N fixation (SNF), and plant N uptake for soybean considering N fertilizer rates on the previous corn crop. Apparent N budgets from corn (N fertilizer minus grain N removal) ranged from approximately −100 to approximately +50 kg N ha−1, and soybean yields were slightly or not affected by corn N management. Case Study I showed that long-term N budgets in corn crops did not affect the following soybean crop yields. In Case Study II, the previous corn N management produced negative or small N surplus that influenced neither soil residual N nor SNF, without compromising soybean productivity. Farmers applying close to economic optimum N rates on corn will likely not generate scenarios of N surplus to compromise SNF or soybean yields. Forthcoming research should further address how long-term and large soil N mining or surplus in corn may enhance or inhibit N fixation for the next soybean crop.

Fruit total phenolic content (TPC) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) are usually assessed by destructive wet chemistry. Yet, for precision agriculture and recent breeding program, more rapid and non-destructive methods are needed. A new portable device, Dualex, is used to access the epidermal polyphenol content of leaves in order to select seedlings with good fruit quality. A field experiment was conducted to investigate the potential of Dualex, applied to fruit breeding, on four selected strawberry genotypes (‘Kent’, ‘Jewel’, ‘Saint-Pierre’ and ‘SJ8976-1’) of known quality. Our results showed that Dualex readings either from the adaxial side (upper side, DUAD), abaxial side (lower side, DUAB), sum of DUAD and DUAB (Phen), soluble solids content (SSC), titratable acidity (TA), TPC and TAC of ‘Jewel’ and ‘Kent’ were significantly higher than those of ‘SJ8976-1’ and ‘Saint-Pierre’. There were positive correlations between DUAD, DUAB and Phen vs. SSC, TA, TPC and TAC. The use of Dualex in strawberry breeding programs might be useful to estimate TA and SSC along with TPC and TAC to select for high fruit quality in a seedling population, which consequently reduces the time from crossing to naming and reduce field costs.

A non-destructive method to predict polyphenol content in strawberry

En niai 1996, un projet fut mene dans la region de Sherrington et Ste-Clotilde (Quebec) afin de determiner le potentiel des capteurs hyperfrequences, visible et proche infrarouge pour estimer la variation des teneurs en eau dans les histosols au printemps. Des donnees hyperfrequences aeroportees furent acquises avec un radiometre SLF MR (Scanning Low Frequency Microwave Radiometerj. Des images furent prises dans le visible et proche infrarouge avec un spectrometre imageur CASI (Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager) monte en parallele avec le radiometre. Une image RADARSAT a haute resolution fut aussi acquise. Les donnees d'humidite du sol et des informations complementaires furent prises dans vingt champs pendant le survol (26 mai 96) et le passage de RADARSAT (30 mai 96). Les resultats preliminaires ont montre que les champs pouvaient etre discrimines selon qu'ils sont nus ou avec cultures/residus en utilisant les spectres de reflectance du CASI. Dans les sols nus. les valeurs de reflectance ont augmente avec la diminution des teneurs en eau. La relation entre la reflectance dans le proche infrarouge (850 ou 870nm) et la teneur en eau etait bien ajustee par une fonction polynomiale du second ordre. Les indices de vegetation (NDVI) calcules au-dessus de champs de cereales etaient correles avec la densite du couvert (gamme 10-25%). Les temperatures de brillance ont presente une relation lineaire avec les teneurs en eau a la surface. Cette relation etait independante de la rugosite et de la presence ou non de cereales. Cependant, la relation entre les coefficients de retrodiffusion de RADARSAT et les teneurs en eau etait dependante de ces deux parametres. Les champs nus lisses (semes en planches) presentaient des valeurs de retrodiffusion plus faibles. Il fut donc possible de distinguer les champs nus lisses des autres champs.
