Journal ArticleDOI
Individualised nutritional support in medical inpatients at nutritional risk: a randomised clinical trial.
Philipp Schuetz,Rebecca Fehr,Valerie Baechli,Martina Geiser,Manuela Deiss,Filomena Gomes,Alexander Kutz,Pascal Tribolet,Thomas Bregenzer,Nina Braun,Claus Hoess,Vojtech Pavlicek,Sarah Schmid,Stefan Bilz,Sarah Sigrist,Michael Brändle,Carmen Benz,Christoph Henzen,Silvia Mattmann,Robert Thomann,Claudia Brand,Jonas Rutishauser,Drahomir Aujesky,Nicolas Rodondi,Jacques Donzé,Jacques Donzé,Zeno Stanga,Beat Mueller +27 more
TL;DR: These findings strongly support the concept of systematically screening medical inpatients on hospital admission regarding nutritional risk, independent of their medical condition, followed by a nutritional assessment and introduction of individualised nutritional support in patients at risk.
Journal ArticleDOI
Unraveling the Link between Malnutrition and Adverse Clinical Outcomes: Association of Acute and Chronic Malnutrition Measures with Blood Biomarkers from Different Pathophysiological States.
Susan Felder,Nina Braun,Zeno Stanga,Prasad Kulkarni,Lukas Faessler,Alexander Kutz,Deborah Steiner,Svenja Laukemann,Sebastian Haubitz,Andreas Huber,Beat Mueller,Philipp Schuetz +11 more
TL;DR: Investigating the association of malnutrition with biomarkers characteristic of different pathophysiological states to better understand the underlying etiological mechanisms suggested that acute malnutrition rather than chronic malnutrition was associated with elevated biomarker levels.
Journal ArticleDOI
Obesity paradox in patients with community-acquired pneumonia: Is inflammation the missing link?
Nina Braun,Claus Hoess,Alexander Kutz,Mirjam Christ-Crain,Robert Thomann,Christoph Henzen,Werner Zimmerli,Beat Mueller,Philipp Schuetz +8 more
TL;DR: Over a 6-y long-term follow-up, obesity is found to be associated with lower all-cause mortality in CAP patients, confirming the obesity paradox in this population, however, differences in inflammatory pathways did not explain these findings.
Journal ArticleDOI
"The obesity paradox" in disease--is the protective effect of obesity true?
TL;DR: Current concepts regarding the underlying pathophysiology and possible explanation for the obesity paradox are summarized, and open questions such as whether age is an effect modifier on the relationship of obesity and mortality are discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent in malnourished inpatients and associated with higher mortality: A prospective cohort study.
Meret Merker,Aline Amsler,Renata Rosa Pereira,Rebekka Bolliger,Pascal Tribolet,Nina Braun,Claus Hoess,Vojtech Pavlicek,Stefan Bilz,Sarah Sigrist,Michael Brändle,Christoph Henzen,Robert Thomann,Jonas Rutishauser,Drahomir Aujesky,Nicolas Rodondi,Jaques Donzé,Jaques Donzé,Zeno Stanga,Beat Mueller,Philipp Schuetz +20 more
TL;DR: This research presents a novel probabilistic procedure called “spot-spot analysis” that allows for real-time analysis of the response of the immune system to foreign substance abuse.
