Enhanced interfacial and mechanical properties of basalt fiber reinforced poly(aryl ether nitrile ketone) composites by amino-silane coupling agents

For ultrasonic welding of carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs), a sharp shaped resin called the energy director (ED), is usually inserted between them. In this study, finite element analyses for ultrasonic welding of CFRPs were performed using a two-dimensional model. The effects of the shape of the ED on the temperature increase, deformation history, and dissipated energy behaviors are discussed. Flat and triangular ED shapes are considered. From the results, it is easier for a triangular ED to increase the temperature than for a flat ED, and hence, the consumed energy and time are less for a triangular ED than for a flat ED. However, in the triangular ED, the temperature is distributed significantly, that is, there is a very high temperature at some point and a very low temperature at other points. Thus, unexpected chemical reactions, such as oxidation, may occur. This study concludes that a triangular ED is not always better than a flat ED. In any case, it was found that an abrupt temperature increase was caused by a synergistic effect. That is, the increase in temperature causes the viscoelastic and frictional dissipated energy to be remarkable, and the increase in the dissipated energy increases the temperature.

Effect of heat treatment on mechanical properties of carbon-fiber-reinforced themoplastic

Crystallization of poly(aryl ether ketone) (PAEK) plays an important role in the impact resistance of composite laminates but it is still unclear how the cooling rate affects the performance. In this paper, carbon fibre (CF) reinforced new copolymer PAEK and commonly used poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) were fabricated by furnace cooling and water cooling. The effects of cooling rates on the crystallization behaviour of thermoplastics, interfacial bonding strength, interlaminar fracture toughness and low-velocity impact performance of composites were studied. Results show that the crystallization and the crystalline size of PAEK are smaller than those of PEEK at the same cooling rate. In composites, the lower crystallinity and smaller crystals of the matrix are conducive to improving the matrix ductility and interfacial bonding strength. Under the water-cooling condition, the impact damage area CF/PAEK is about 71% lower than that of CF/PEEK, while the CAI is about 14% higher. 

The effect of cooling rates on crystallization and low-velocity impact behaviour of carbon fibre reinforced poly(aryl ether ketone) composites

Graphene is often used to improve interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon fiber/epoxy resin (CF/EP) composites. It is still a challenge to improve the toughness while maintaining the in-layer properties. In this study, 2D graphene oxide carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin matrix (2D CF-GO/EP) composites were prepared by a vacuum infiltration hot-press forming experimental system (VIHPS), and three-point flexural and end notch flexural (ENF) tests were carried out. With the increase of the fiber mass fraction in the composites, the mode II interlaminar fracture toughness (GIIC) layers decrease gradually, and the bond property between the fiber and matrix interface layer becomes worse, because the accumulation of dense fiber bundles reduces the matrix penetration ability of cracks. However, the flexural properties increased first and then decreased, and reached the best flexural properties at 64.9%. When the fiber mass fraction is too high, the interlamellar bonding properties will decrease, and the fiber bundles will compress and affect each other. The delamination phenomenon will occur between the layers of the composites, which affects the overall bearing strength and stress limit of the composites. The results of the study show that the composites prepared by VIHPS have excellent mechanical properties, and the content of carbon fiber plays an important role in the influencing factors of the interlaminar and in-layer properties of composites.

Effect of matrix crystallinity of carbon fiber reinforced polyamide 6 on static bending properties

Carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastics are consisted with the carbon fiber and thermos plastics such as PP, PA6, PI, and PC and so on. Mechanical properties, especially viscoelasticity, of CFRTP were depended on the matrix resin, therefore, if the mechanical properties of matrix resin has changed, CFRTP’s properties will be also changed. In this study, carbon fiber reinforced polyamide 6 was used for evaluate the effect of crystallization. The materials were heat treated for crystallization, and the crystallization was controlled by heat treatment time. As the result of dynamic mechanical analysis, storage modulus was decreased with the increase in the heat treatment time, however, longer heat treatment time made the storage modulus increased. As the results of DSC measurement, the peak shape of melting point was different each other. The double peak was observed with the longer heat treatment time, however, the single peak was observed with the short heat treatment time. This is because the mechanical properties of CFRTP was dominated by the peak shape and peak area of the melting point.
