Substrates, in particular a substrate of glass, ceramic, plastic and metal and glazed or enamelled substrates, with a self-cleaning surface comprise an at least partly superficially hydrophobic structured (elevations and depressions) coating located on the substrate. Substrates according to the invention comprise particles with an average diameter of less than 100 nm, in particular 5 to less than 50 nm, for formation of the structure of the coating. Compositions according to the invention which are employed for the production of the structured coating of substrates according to the invention comprise, in addition to the structure-forming particles, a layer-forming material in a weight ratio of 100 : 1 to 1 : 2, in particular 20 : 1 to 1 : 1. In addition to having good self-cleaning properties, the coating is distinguished by its transparency. The use of the substrates is aimed in particular at the most diverse glass articles.

Substrates with a self-cleaning surface, a process for their production and their use

A composition which can make the surface of a member hydrophilic to impart anti-fogging properties thereto. This composition comprises (a) photocatalyst particles made of a metal oxide, (b) at least one component selected from the group consisting of particulate silica, precursors capable of forming silicone resin films, and precursors capable of forming silica films, and (c) a solvent, with the total content of solid components of the components (a) and (b) in the composition being 0.01 to 5 % by weight. The composition can impart hydrophilicity to a member by an extremely simple means of applying the composition to the member and drying or heating it. The hydrophilic thin film thus formed is transparent and therefore does not impair the transparency and appearance of the member, even when the member is essentially required to be transparent. The surface of a member having a film formed from the composition thereon has properties such that waterdrops adhering to the surface are immediately evaporated and that the surface is little stained and can be easily rid of stains even if stained.

Photocatalytic hydrophilic coating composition

A composition is disclosed which can hydrophilify the surface of a member to impart an antifogging property to the surface of the member. The composition for hydrophilifying the surface of the member comprises at least (a) photocatalytic particles of a metallic oxide, (b) a precursor capable of forming a silicone resin film or a precursor capable of forming a silica film, and (c) a solvent, the total content of the photocatalytic particle and the solid matter of the precursor in the composition being 0.01 to 5% by weight. The hydrophilic property can be imparted simply by applying the composition onto a member and drying or heating the composition applied to the member. The resultant hydrophilic thin film is transparent and, hence, does not sacrifice the transparency and appearance of a member required to be transparent. Further, the surface of a member with the above composition applied thereto has such a property that water droplets adhered thereon can be immediately removed by vaporization and the surface is less likely to be soiled and, even when a contaminant is adhered thereon, can easily release the contaminant therefrom.

Photocatalytically hydrophilifiable coating composition

Alkoxy-modified silsesquioxane compounds are described. The alkoxy-modified silsesquioxane compounds contain an alkoxysilane group that participates in an alkoxysilane-silica reaction as a silica dispersing agent in rubber, with the release of zero to about 0.1% by weight of the rubber of volatile organic compounds (VOC), especially alcohol, during compounding and further processing. Further described are methods for making alkoxy-modified silsesquioxanes, methods for making vulcanizable rubber compounds containing alkoxy-modified silsesquioxanes, vulcanizable rubber compounds containing alkoxy-modified silsesquioxanes, and pneumatic tires comprising a component that contains alkoxy-modified silsesquioxanes.

Compounding silica-reinforced rubber with low volatile organic compound (voc) emission

The invention relates to self-cleaning paint coatings that exhibit the Lotus effect® and to an agent and a method for producing the same. The inventive paint coatings comprise a paint base coat and a top coat, which has structure-forming particles with an average particle diameter of 50 nm. The agent contains a liquid medium, at least one hydrophobing agent that has been dissolved therein and the aforementioned structure-forming particles held in suspension. The method comprises the following steps: coating of a substrate with a paint coat, application of the liquid to pasty agent that forms the top coat to the partially cured or uncured paint base coat and curing of the top coat and if required, the paint base coat.

Self-cleaning paint coating and a method and agent for producing the same

A coating composition which is comprised of an emulsion of a silicone resin, typically a water-insoluble, silanol group-bearing silicone resin dispersed in water, and contains photocatalyst particles, typically titanium oxide forms a hydrophilic film having a water-drop contact angle of no more than 60° when irradiated with UV-containing light. The composition eliminates the use of organic solvents and has excellent dispersion and storage stability. Films obtained by applying this coating composition to the surface of substrates have excellent weathering resistance and antifouling properties due to a self-cleaning effect arising from the photocatalytic action of the particles.

Coating compositions, hydrophilic films, and hydrophilic film-coated articles

A silicone resin-containing emulsion composition is prepared by emulsion polymerizing a solution containing a water-insoluble silanol group-bearing silicone resin and a radical polymerizable vinyl monomer and substantially free of an organic solvent. The emulsion may further contain a film-forming assistant having a boiling point of at least 100°C and soluble or uniformly dispersible in water. The emulsion can be coated and cured into a film having mar resistance, weather resistance, and chemical resistance.
