Compared with lithium-ion batteries with liquid electrolytes, all-solid-state batteries offer an attractive option owing to their potential in improving the safety and achieving both high power and high energy densities. Despite extensive research efforts, the development of all-solid-state batteries still falls short of expectation largely because of the lack of suitable candidate materials for the electrolyte required for practical applications. Here we report lithium superionic conductors with an exceptionally high conductivity (25 mS cm−1 for Li9.54Si1.74P1.44S11.7Cl0.3), as well as high stability ( ∼0 V versus Li metal for Li9.6P3S12). A fabricated all-solid-state cell based on this lithium conductor is found to have very small internal resistance, especially at 100 ∘C. The cell possesses high specific power that is superior to that of conventional cells with liquid electrolytes. Stable cycling with a high current density of 18 C (charging/discharging in just three minutes; where C is the C-rate) is also demonstrated. The development of all-solid-state batteries requires fast lithium conductors. Here, the authors report a lithium compound, Li9.54Si1.74P1.44S11.7Cl0.3, with an exceptionally high conductivity and demonstrate that all-solid-state batteries based on the compound have high power densities.

High-power all-solid-state batteries using sulfide superionic conductors

Solid-state batteries have recently attracted great interest as potentially safe and stable high-energy storage systems. However, key issues remain unsolved, hindering full-scale commercialization.

A solid future for battery development

Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) have emerged as high-priority materials for safe, energy-dense and reversible storage of electrochemical energy in batteries. In this Review, we assess recent progress in the design, synthesis and analysis of SSEs, and identify key failure modes, performance limitations and design concepts for creating SSEs to meet requirements for practical applications. We provide an overview of the development and characteristics of SSEs, followed by analysis of ion transport in the bulk and at interfaces based on different single-valent (Li+, Na+, K+) and multivalent (Mg2+, Zn2+, Ca2+, Al3+) cation carriers of contemporary interest. We analyse the progress in overcoming issues associated with the poor ionic conductivity and high interfacial resistance of inorganic SSEs and the poor oxidative stability and cation transference numbers of polymer SSEs. Perspectives are provided on the design requirements for future generations of SSEs, with a focus on the chemical, geometric, mechanical, electrochemical and interfacial transport features required to accelerate progress towards practical solid-state batteries in which metals are paired with energetic cathode chemistries, including Ni-rich and Li-rich intercalating materials, sustainable organic materials, S8, O2 and CO2. Solid-state batteries based on electrolytes with low or zero vapour pressure provide a promising path towards safe, energy-dense storage of electrical energy. In this Review, we consider the requirements and design rules for solid-state electrolytes based on inorganics, organic polymers and organic–inorganic hybrids.

Designing solid-state electrolytes for safe, energy-dense batteries

The ever-growing demand for advanced rechargeable lithium-ion batteries in portable electronics and electric vehicles has spurred intensive research efforts over the past decade. The key to sustaining the progress in Li-ion batteries lies in the quest for safe, low-cost positive electrode (cathode) materials with desirable energy and power capabilities. One approach to boost the energy and power densities of batteries is to increase the output voltage while maintaining a high capacity, fast charge–discharge rate, and long service life. This review gives an account of the various emerging high-voltage positive electrode materials that have the potential to satisfy these requirements either in the short or long term, including nickel-rich layered oxides, lithium-rich layered oxides, high-voltage spinel oxides, and high-voltage polyanionic compounds. The key barriers and the corresponding strategies for the practical viability of these cathode materials are discussed along with the optimization of electrolytes and other cell components, with a particular emphasis on recent advances in the literature. A concise perspective with respect to plausible strategies for future developments in the field is also provided.

High-voltage positive electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries

Solid-state batteries have been attracting wide attention for next generation energy storage devices due to the probability to realize higher energy density and superior safety performance compared with the state-of-the-art lithium ion batteries. However, there are still intimidating challenges for developing low cost and industrially scalable solid-state batteries with high energy density and stable cycling life for large-scale energy storage and electric vehicle applications. This review presents an overview on the scientific challenges, fundamental mechanisms, and design strategies for solid-state batteries, specifically focusing on the stability issues of solid-state electrolytes and the associated interfaces with both cathode and anode electrodes. First, we give a brief overview on the history of solid-state battery technologies, followed by introduction and discussion on different types of solid-state electrolytes. Then, the associated stability issues, from phenomena to fundamental understandings, are intensively discussed, including chemical, electrochemical, mechanical, and thermal stability issues; effective optimization strategies are also summarized. State-of-the-art characterization techniques and in situ and operando measurement methods deployed and developed to study the aforementioned issues are summarized as well. Following the obtained insights, perspectives are given in the end on how to design practically accessible solid-state batteries in the future.

Approaching Practically Accessible Solid-State Batteries: Stability Issues Related to Solid Electrolytes and Interfaces

All solid-state batteries are of key importance in the development of next-generation energy storage devices with high energy density. Herein, we report the fabrication and operation of bulk-type 5 V-class all solid-state batteries consisting of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode, Li10GeP2S12 solid-electrolyte, and Li metal anode. The 1st discharge capacity is about 80 mAh g–1 with an average voltage of 4.3 V. The discharge capacity gradually decreases during the subsequent cycles. X-ray diffraction and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements reveal that the capacity fading results from the growth of a resistive interfacial layer on the cathode composite. The development of suitable conductive additive and sulfide solid electrolyte materials is essential for the development of high-voltage all solid-state batteries.

Bulk-Type All Solid-State Batteries with 5 V Class LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 Cathode and Li10GeP2S12 Solid Electrolyte

A solid solution of the lithium superionic conductor Li10+δGe1+δP2−δS12 (0 ≤ δ ≤ 0.35) was synthesized and its structure and ionic conductivity were examined. The highest ionic conductivity value of 1.42 × 10−2 S cm−1 was obtained at 300 K with a sintered pellet of the sample having the highest solid solution lithium content of δ = 0.35. The Arrhenius conductivity curves obtained for this material exhibited a gradual change in slope over the temperature range of 193–373 K and the activation energy for ionic conduction decreased from 26 kJ mol−1 below 373 K to 7 kJ mol−1 above 573 K, which is typical of highly ionic conducting solids. The crystal structures of the solid solutions were determined using neutron diffraction, and conduction pathways were visualized through analysis by applying the maximum entropy method. The lithium distribution was found to disperse significantly throughout a one-dimensional conduction pathway as the temperature was increased from 4.8 K to 750 K. In addition, two-dimensional distribution of lithium along the ab plane became apparent at high temperatures, suggesting that the conduction mechanism changes from one-dimensional to three-dimensional with increasing temperature.
