We review the application of non-relativistic constituent quark models to study one, two and three non-strange baryon systems. We present results for the baryon spectra, potentials and observables of the nucleon?nucleon (NN), N?, ?? and NN*(1440) systems, and binding energies of three non-strange baryon systems. We emphasize the observable effects related to quark antisymmetry and its interplay with quark dynamics.

Quark-model study of few-baryon systems

Baryon–baryon interactions in the SU6 quark model and their applications to light nuclear systems

The author discusses the application of the quark cluster model to the baryon-baryon interaction. The short-range repulsion and spin-orbit force in the nucleon-nucleon potential are shown to be well described by the quark-quark interaction and quark exchange between the two nucleons. An extension of the study to systems with strangeness is made. There the author studies more details about the effect coming from the composite structure of the baryon and the quark-quark interaction. The dihyperon, which is a flavour SU(3) singlet state, is also discussed in terms of the quark cluster model. Finally the effects of quark degrees of freedom in nuclei, especially on the electromagnetic properties of the deuteron, are studied and compared with the results of conventional nuclear theory.

Study of baryon-baryon interactions and nuclear properties in the quark cluster model

Interactions between the octet-baryons (B8) in the spin-flavor SU6 quark model are investigated in a unified coupled-channels framework of the resonating-group method (RGM). The interaction Hamiltonian for quarks consists of the phenomenological confinement potential, the color Fermi-Breit interaction with explicit flavor-symmetry breaking (FSB), and effective-meson exchange potentials of scalar-, pseudoscalar- and vector-meson types. The model parameters are determined to reproduce the properties of the nucleon-nucleon (NN) system and the low-energy cross section data for the hyperon-nucleon (YN) interactions. The NN phase shifts and many observables for the NN and YN interactions are nicely reproduced. Properties of these B8 B8 interactions are analyzed through the G-matrix calculations. The B8 B8 interactions are then applied to some of few-baryon systems and light Lambda-hypernuclei in a three-cluster Faddeev formalism using two-cluster RGM kernels. An application to the three-nucleon system shows that the quark-model NN interaction can give a sufficient triton binding energy with little room for the three-nucleon force. The hypertriton Faddeev calculation indicates that the attraction of the Lambda N interaction in the 1S0 state is only slightly more attractive than that in the 3S1 state. In the application to the alpha alpha Lambda system, the energy spectrum of 9 Lambda Be is well reproduced using the alpha alpha RGM kernel. The very small spin-orbit splitting of the 9 Lambda Be excited states is also discussed. In the Lambda Lambda alpha Faddeev calculation, the NAGARA event for 6 Lambda Lambda He is found to be consistent with the quark-model Lambda Lambda interaction.

Baryon-baryon interactions in the SU6 quark model and their applications to light nuclear systems

For the intermediate- and short-range part of the nucleon-nucleon interaction a new approach is suggested based on the formation of a symmetric six-quark bag in the state |(0s)6[6]X,L = 0 dressed due to strong coupling to π, σ and ρ fields (dressed bag). This new mechanism offers both a strong intermediate-range attraction which replaces the effective σ-exchange (or excitation of two isobars in the intermediate state) in traditional force models and also short-range repulsion. Part of the intermediate and the full long-range contribution to the nucleon-nucleon force is also in this approach described by the Yukawa meson-exchange mechanism. A simple illustrative model is developed which demonstrates clearly how well the suggested new mechanism can reproduce the NN data.
