Measuring probabilistic reaction norms for age and size at maturation

TL;DR: A new probabilistic concept of reaction norms for age and size at maturation that is applicable when observations are carried out at discrete time intervals is presented, and robust estimations of maturation reaction norms should be based on logistic regression or on other statistical models that treat the probability of maturing as a dependent variable.
Journal ArticleDOI

Critical Population Density Triggers Rapid Formation of Vast Oceanic Fish Shoals

TL;DR: By quantifying the formation processes of vast oceanic fish shoals during spawning, it is shown that a rapid transition from disordered to highly synchronized behavior occurs as population density reaches a critical value and general theoretical predictions believed to apply in nature irrespective of animal species are confirmed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mesoscale eddies are oases for higher trophic marine life.

TL;DR: This work shows that anticyclonic eddies shape distribution and density of marine life from the surface to bathyal depths and demonstrates that they provide rich feeding habitat for higher trophic marine life.
Journal ArticleDOI

Migratory behaviour of north-east Arctic cod, studied by use of data storage tags

TL;DR: Data storage tags have been used to study vertical movements of individually tagged cod and calculations indicated that the fish probably were negatively buoyant most of the time, but the direct effect of the vertical movements on the acoustical target strength could not be quantified.
