This volume continues to explore the life and works of Auguste Comte during his so-called second career. It covers the period from the coup d'etat of Louis Napoleon in late 1851 to Comte's death in 1857. During these early years of the Second Empire, Comte became increasingly conservative and anxious to control his disciples. This study offers the first study of the tensions within his movement. Focusing on his second masterpiece, the Systeme de politique positive, and other important books, such as the Synthese subjective, Mary Pickering not only sheds light on Comte's intellectual development but also traces the dissemination of positivism and the Religion of Humanity throughout many parts of the world.

This book is a reassessment of the international monetary crises of the post-World War I period that led to the Great Depression of the 1930s. It also analyses the responses of the world economic powers to the Depression and how new monetary policies set the stage for the watershed post-World War II system established at Bretton Woods. It offers new theories of what effect the Great Depression had on the collapse of the world monetary system, and what effect the collapse had on deepening and prolonging the Depression, by exploring the link between global economic crisis and the the gold standard (the framework for international monetary affairs until 1931). The events described had a profound effect upon twentieth-century history: the Depression abetted the rise of Hitler and the demise of the gold standard is a historical cause of inflation.

International Monetary Cooperation Since Bretton Woods

Margaret Thatcher (1925-2013) was the United Kingdom's prime minister from 1979 to 1990. Her informal transatlantic alliance with U.S. President Ronald Reagan from 1981 to 1989 played an important role in the promotion of an international neoliberal policy agenda that remains influential today. Her critique of UK social democracy during the 1970s and her adoption of key neoliberal strategies, such as financial deregulation, trade liberalization, and the privatization of public goods and services, were popularly labeled Thatcherism. In this article, we consider the nature of Thatcherism and its impact on health and well-being during her period as prime minister and, to a lesser extent, in the years that follow; we focus mainly on Great Britain (England, Scotland, and Wales). Thatcher's policies were associated with substantial increases in socioeconomic and health inequalities: these issues were actively marginalized and ignored by her governments. In addition, her public-sector reforms applied business principles to the welfare state and prepared the National Health Service for subsequent privatization.

The impact of Thatcherism on health and well-being in Britain

Although economic geography has existed as an identifiable subdiscipline for close on a century, it is only since the Second World War that its intellectual history has been closely shaped by economics. Nevertheless, by the mid-1980s economic geography appeared to have matured into a stable and well-structured field of academic endeavour, organised around two primary and interrelated research programmes, focusing respectively on industrial location dynamics and the process of uneven regional development, and using concepts and theories from neoclassical, Keynesian and Marxian economics. Not surprisingly, given the quite different ‘world views’ that characterise these three main competing schools of modern economic thought (see Wolff and Resnick, 1987; Cole, Cameron and Edwards, 1991), this theoretical trigemony within economic geography produced contrasting and conflicting analyses of the space economy. However, underpinning these diverse and contrasting accounts there were certain shared assumptions, principles and aspirations, which, even if rarely acknowledged, served to impart an underlying unity to economic geography as it evolved from the mid-1950s to the mid-1980s.
