TL;DR: Radical grafting of two monomers, methacrylic acid and polyethylene glycolmethacrylate, onto commercial composite polyamide reverse osmosis membranes was performed and found that the membranes were surface modified without damage to their transport properties.

TL;DR: In this article, a new grafting procedure was developed for surface modification of commercial polyamide reverse osmosis membranes, which was successfully grafted from aqueous solutions under mild conditions.
Abstract: A new grafting procedure was developed for surface modification of commercial polyamide reverse osmosis membranes. Acidic and neutral acrylic monomers and sulfo-containing vinyl monomers were successfully grafted from aqueous solutions under mild conditions. The modifications were monitored by ATR-FTIR spectra. The characteristic peaks of functional groups introduced by grafting were evaluated. The spectral findings correlated with physicochemical properties of the membranes.

TL;DR: GARD represents a simple model for primordial chemical selection of mutually catalytic sets and can sustain self-replication up to a critical dilution rate, λc, related to the graded extent of mutual catalysis.
Abstract: A Graded Autocatalysis Replication Domain (GARD) model is proposed, which provides a rigorous kinetic analysis of simple chemical sets that manifest mutual catalysis. It is shown that catalytic closure can sustain self-replication up to a critical dilution rate, λc, related to the graded extent of mutual catalysis. We explore the behavior of vesicles containing GARD species whose mutual catalysis is governed by a previously published statistical distribution. In the population thus generated, some GARD vesicles display a significantly higher replication efficiency than most others. GARD thus represents a simple model for primordial chemical selection of mutually catalytic sets.
