Journal ArticleDOI

Integrated versus stand-alone second generation ethanol production from sugarcane bagasse and trash.

TL;DR: Results show that the integrated first and second generation ethanol production process from sugarcane leads to better economic results when compared with the stand-alone plant, especially when advanced hydrolysis technologies and pentoses fermentation are included.
Journal ArticleDOI

Anaerobic digestion of vinasse from sugarcane biorefineries in Brazil from energy, environmental, and economic perspectives: Profit or expense?

TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated vinasse anaerobic digestion in a sugarcane biorefinery in terms of energy, environmental, and economic considerations, and found that the energy potential of a single biorefa-finery is comparable to the electricity supply demand of a city of approximately 130,000 inhabitants or to the surplus energy from bagasse burning that is exported by some sugar cane mills in Brazil.
Journal ArticleDOI

Sugarcane processing for ethanol and sugar in Brazil

TL;DR: In this article, the technologies usually employed in sugarcane mills in Brazil are briefly described, along with opportunities for process improvements and suggestions for the future of the sugar cane industry.
Journal ArticleDOI

Emergy assessment of integrated production systems of grains, pig and fish in small farms in the South Brazil

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used emergy methodology to evaluate environmental aspects of integrated production systems of grains, pig and fish in small farms in the South region of Brazil, and the results obtained signalize that an integrated system has better emergy efficiency, is more sustainable and is less stressful on the environment in comparison with separated production subsystems.
Journal ArticleDOI

Comparative LCA of ethanol versus gasoline in Brazil using different LCIA methods

TL;DR: In this article, a case study of the comparison between environmental impacts of gasoline and ethanol form sugarcane in Brazil is presented, where the phases of feedstock and (bio)fuel production, distribution, and use are included in system boundaries.
