Anaerobic digestion of vinasse from sugarcane ethanol production in Brazil: Challenges and perspectives

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the actual context of anaerobic digestion within the sugarcane ethanol production in Brazil, presenting the main obstacles for its full application and the directions to promote it as well.
Journal ArticleDOI

Anaerobic digestion of vinasse from sugarcane biorefineries in Brazil from energy, environmental, and economic perspectives: Profit or expense?

TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated vinasse anaerobic digestion in a sugarcane biorefinery in terms of energy, environmental, and economic considerations, and found that the energy potential of a single biorefa-finery is comparable to the electricity supply demand of a city of approximately 130,000 inhabitants or to the surplus energy from bagasse burning that is exported by some sugar cane mills in Brazil.
Journal ArticleDOI

Ethanol from biomass: A comparative overview

TL;DR: In this article, the authors provided an overview of the ethanol production processes from sugarcane, corn and sugar beet in terms of energy indicators, carbon emissions and economic aspects, providing the basis for the comparative assessment.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of sulfide concentration on autotrophic denitrification from nitrate and nitrite in vertical fixed-bed reactors

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of sulfide concentration on this bioprocess using nitrate and nitrite as electron acceptors in vertical fixed-bed reactors was evaluated and the results showed that intermediary sulfur compounds were mainly produced when excess of electron donor was applied, which was more evident when nitrate was used.
Journal ArticleDOI

Biogas production within the bioethanol production chain: Use of co-substrates for anaerobic digestion of sugar beet vinasse.

TL;DR: The anaerobic digestion of sugar beet vinasse was optimised using continuous stirred-tank reactors supplemented either with lime fertiliser or with 3% cow manure, and biogas production achieved very close to the BMP of v inasse.
