Colorimetric Method for Determination of Sugars and Related Substances

TL;DR: In this article, a method was developed to determine submicro amounts of sugars and related substances using a phenol-sulfuric acid reaction, which is useful for the determination of the composition of polysaccharides and their methyl derivatives.
Journal ArticleDOI

A colorimetric method for the determination of sugars.

TL;DR: Preliminary experiments showed that the anthrone and the α-naphthol sulphonate reagents give good results with pure sugar solutions, but the presence of only traces of solvents such as butanol, phenol and propionic acid used in the chromatographic separation of the sugars rendered them useless.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nature of a Hemicellulose extracted from Cellulose with Water

TL;DR: In this article, small amounts of water-soluble carbohydrate impurities were detected in the paper (Whatman No. 1) used for separating mixtures of sugars, which led to the development in this laboratory of the phenol-sulphuric acid procedure for quantitative determination of sugars.
