Transient Radiation Effects in Low-Loss Optical Waveguides

TL;DR: In this article, the Cerenkov process was shown to occur in low-loss optical waveguides in severe radiation environments, and the spectral data and angular dependence of luminescence were used to verify the effect of radiation on optical fiber properties.
Journal ArticleDOI

A technique for measuring optical fiber transmission using the time dispersion of Cerenkov radiation

TL;DR: In this paper, a technique based on measurement of time dispersion in a δ-function Cerenkov pulse has been developed for determining the attenuation coefficient α (λ) of low-loss optical fibers.
ReportDOI

Fiber optic utilization at the Nevada Test Site

TL;DR: In this paper, two 700-m Corning Corguide cables were used to provide thirteen single fiber data channels from the vicinity of the underground detonation, 350 meters below ground level, to recording instrumentation, and no fiber performance degradation was observed during extensive procedures used to seal the shaft.
Proceedings ArticleDOI

A Fiber-Optic Time Domain Reflectometer

TL;DR: In this paper, an optical time domain reflectometer is described which combines in one instrument the basic capability to analyze several important fiber characteristics, such as the polarization properties of light to enable high sensitivity fault detection close to the fiber input end; its probe pulse temporal characteristics and high gain photodetector in combination provide excellent discontinuity location resolution in long lossy fibers.
